black tank vent question

When I run my black tank flush I prefer to nearly fill tank with water a couple times. Does the black tank vent constantly or only when you flush toilet? Would hate to be filling tank with water through black flush hookup and not having the tank vent air. Could rupture the tank i'd bet.

And that vent is permanently open if your system is working properly (as in, vent is not clogged), it doesn't open or close with the toilet flushing.

I could be wrong but I think I read somewhere that when you use the black tank flush, make sure your dump valve is open. Not sure about that but my few memory cells I have left are bringing me back to that point.

That is true. The manual and Jayco recommend you leave the valve open. The reasoning is that if you over fill, you get a very large mess as the refuse begins to come up through the toilet. There are a few of us on here who are rebellious and leave the valve closed, but I would say our biggest recommendation if you do this is DO NOT WALK AWAY. It's too easy for a spouse, a child, a neighbor, a falling leaf, whatever, to distract us, and we could end up leaving the valve closed and the tank rinse on resulting in a bad situation.

Everyone seems to develop their own method for handling these things. It is mostly a combination of observing paranoid manufacturer lawyer warnings, what someone else told you they heard and your own experience. Every now and then a glimmer of common sense will work its way into the equation.

[stepping down from the soap box]

Usually my black water tank is less than 75% full. I hookup and turn on the tank flusher with the dump valve closed. While everything is getting stirred up and suspended I hook up the sewer dump hose. After a couple of minutes I open the dump valve. I leave the flusher running until it runs clear. I have a clear 45 degree elbow to observe the condition.
