Break-Away Switch
Hello all,
I recently purchased a 1996 Jayco Designer Fifth-wheel. I did lots of work on the trailer, i.e. Roof repair and recoating, running new t-stat wire for A/C, water heater repair, slide-out repair, furnace repair and a lot of minor things. (The trailer had sat for about five years without being used.)
When I thought I had fixed everything, I noticed there was no break-away cable or switch near the hitch. (The trailer was towed to my property by the previous owner.) Near the hitch is a hole with two wires coming out of it. Is this for the break-away switch? The hole is right by the receptacle that's used for tow vehicle wiring. Also, there's a small sign stating the break-away switch needs to be connected to a 12 volt system. Is this 12 volts provided my the RV batteries or does it use a seperate battery?

I will bet those wires are for the breakaway switch... which is powered by the house battery(s)

I agree with Seann. I had my breakaway switch catch on my 5th wheel hitch and pull out. I couldn't figure out why I could not back my unit up and I see a strange red icon flash on my brake controller. I can now say that these things really work!!!

One more thing to fix before you tow it. Those are available at most rv supplies. Hook up the 2 wires and it should do it's job.
It gets power from the trailer batteries.

Are you saying that if my battery in the camper is disconnected, that the breakaway switch will not work? By breakaway switch, you are refering to the cable that slams on the trailor breaks should the camper become disconnected from the hitch?

The pupose of your trailer batteries on a breakaway switch is to power the Electric brakes in the event that your trailer should " brakeaway" from your vehicle. With the battery disconected, your brakes will not work.

Well, sounds like an easy fix.
I'll just use the break-away switch off of an older fifth wheel I have.

Once installed, it is easy to check out for proper operation. You can hear the brakes operate when the pin is pulled.

That is really good to know, because I always disconnect my battery when I park it after camping. I will make a note on my " to do list" to make sure I reconnect it before hauling it. Thank You
