Can my 2001 Tundra tow a 5th wheel? It has the 8cyl engine.

Unlikely. It would have to be a VERY small 5th wheel. Like one of those little fiberglass deals (which are very cool BTW, but pretty expensive).

I know there are some half ton tow-able 5vers, but with most of them the pin weight will be too heavy for the axle.

OP - the only way to really answer this is to understand the exact specs of your truck (GVWR, GVCWR, RAWR, available payload, etc) relative to the specs of the trailer you have in mind.

The Eagle HT line is "half ton" towable, at least from a marketing standpoint.

But I've been running through the #'s in prep for getting my Eagle HT 29.5BHDS (and an eventual trip to the scales) and let's just say I'm glad I have a 3/4 ton truck.

That's the key, "from a marketing standpoint". Many 1/2T can pull the weight, but can they carry the pin? That's the bigger question that often gets overlooked.

There are a few guys hauling 5ers with late model Tundras and doing okay, but I don't know that the 2001 is up for the task on MOST 5ers.

Our last Tundra was a '04 with a 4.7l v8. It was a screamin' engine, and had no problem towing a really big Fleetwood pop up, but when we hooked up the new TT and went up some long hills, it didn't like the wind resistance at all. Hence the next Tundra with the 5.7. Can't say about pin weight.

The 2001 Tundra towing capacity is 7200 lbs. at best.

The smallest Eagle HT GVWR is 9950 lbs. and total empty weight spec is 6320 lbs. and dry hitch pin weight is 1240 lbs.

IMHO, No you will not be able to tow the smallest 5er with your Tundra safely.

The shuttle tow was real, but newer than 2001. It was a stock 5.7 with weight added to the box, and some pressure out of the tires. Pulled in 4-LO across a bridge that the original rigging was too heavy for. Quite an opportunity!!

A 5th wheel needs at a minimum 15% of its weight on the pin. 15 to 25% is commonly quoted. If you use an average of 20% pin weight and lets assume your available payload is around 1200 lbs after passengers and other stuff in the truck you would max out at 6000lbs for a 5th wheel that you could tow and remain within your numbers.

This will change a bit based on your specific trucks payload and your passengers etc... but is probably not far off.

Jayco's smallest 5th wheel is over 6000lbs dry and has a 9000+ GVWR with a 1240lbs dry hitch weight.

I think you will find that even the half ton towable ones will have at least 1600 to 2000 lbs pin weight. Too much for any half ton I have driven. But there are a few 2wd regular cabs that could probably do it or some heavy duty payload variants that can but not your general half ton.

I'll call it truth in advertising when someone shows me a door sticker stating it has a 165,000# tow capacity

Check out your Tundra as to what it has on it. Engine, axle, tow package etc. Then look up your tow capacity and as others have mentioned, load capacity. I have worked in campgrounds where 5ers were pulled successfully with a fully decked out Tundra. I have no issue towing my 27RLS with my Tundra, and I typically pull in Colorado. Mountains are a non issue.
