Electrical Question

Our 321RLTS has an installed generator with a transfer switch. We use a surge protector at the pedestal, and there is also one onboard.

The other day, the rig was plugged into shore power (30 amp plug to 50 amp adapter). I turned on the 15k a/c and it ran normally for about three minutes and then stopped. Lost all a/c power at that point.

The generator runs fine and we have full, normal a/c power. But nothing from shore power.

Ok, I have a light on the plug so I know there is power at the outlet. The pedestal surge protector doesn't turn on now.

I don't know how to SAFELY test the cord, the transfer switch or the installed surge protector.

Any ideas??

The one at the pedestal/cord is a TRC Surge Guard 34730. The installed one is a TRC model 34560.

As a test, I took the portable one out of the circuit, but still no power to the coach.

I have heard stories of bad transfer switches. I don't know hoe to test unless opening/closing may shake something loose.

Maybe someone will chime in because I have read about it here on JOF recently.

That's kind of what I think as well. This one is a replacement for one that failed. Maybe this one has also given up the ghost.

It kinda sounds like the Pedestal Surge protector may have partially stopped a transient but in the process enough got through to fry some circuitry in the auto transfer switch?

I bet the reason the Pedestal Surge protector doesn't work now is it was probably smoked in the process.

You're still getting AC from the generator possibly because that side was isolated at the time of the transient, but it won't transfer because the transfer SW is not sensing shore power.

Noe of which helps you test anything out, sorry, but I would get an RV tech/electrician familiar with RV equipment to take a look at the transfer switch.
