Emptying water heater

Hello fellow Campers,

Is there a "correct" way to empty the hot water heater after trip? I have been pulling out the plug to empty the tank. My wife read something about draining your hot water into your grey water tank. I didn't understand how draining the hot water into the grey tank would not allow cold water into the hot water tank. Please share your methods.

When I drain my tank, I pull the plug.

But I only drain it once a year - when winterizing. Never heard of draining it after every trip.

I use the low point drain and pull the plug.

Mine empties when I open the low point drain valves to drain the water lines. Make sure you open all of the faucets when doing this. Also open the pressure relief valve to prevent a vacuum in the tank which will keep it from draining.

Once you open all the faucets (hot and cold) and turn off the pump, the water heater will drain.

However, the plug, I believe is lower in the tank than the cold water inlet.

-----------

Any particular reason for draining the system between trips? Because once you open the water system to atmosphere, you will HAVE to re-sanitize and refill for every trip.

I pull the plug after every trip. In fact, I drain ALL the water after every trip.

I pull the plug just because it's faster that way. The low point drains will drain it too, but I still lift the pressure relief valve and pull the nylon plug on the heater itself.
