Generator for 38FLSA Pinnacle question

My 2016 38FLSA Pinnacle is prepped for a gas generator. I'm trying to decide whether to install a gas or LP generator. I have heard some complaints about getting gas fumes from the fuel tank in the living area of the 5er. Has anyone experienced this issue? Also, Jayco offers the 5500 Onan as an option. I live near a Cummins factory with a service center that will do the RV installs. They are suggesting a 7000 Onan for 2 15 BTU AC, microwave and residential fridge. Has anyone had any issues running applicances and AC with the 5500 Onan?

Thanks,

I opted for the 7000, not much difference in price for the extra capacity. Mine is gasoline and we have not had a issue with fumes. If you have prep option install is very very easy. Not sure what they are quoting you for the install but it shouldn't be very much.

No fumes and the 5500 runs everything just fine. The 7000 has 2 30 amp breakers the same as the 5500 so both will trip under the same load.

Most 5500's have 30 and 20 amp breakers, not twin 30's. But you can spec them to have twin 30's. My 5500 has a 30 and 20.

Mine came from the factory with 2-30s and that is also Onan's spec for the EVAP, our 6000 quiet diesel in the SENECA was the same configuration. The 30/20 is the option.

When I researched new Onan 5500's they were mostly 30/20 that places stocked or sold. A 5500 watt at 120 is 45.8 amps, so 30/20 would be ideal. 30/30 would be easy to overload the genset. But like I said, most of what I found and priced were 30/20. Neither are options, it's by the model number what breakers is has.

You can also change to breakers to any amp rating you'd like as well.

The 5500 evap is available with either 30/20 or 30/30. Models 7866 and 8214.

My Generac NP52 also has 30/20 breakers.

I can only speak from my experience and what I've seen. Not all 5500's have 30/30 breakers.

The EVAP spec as of 2014 is 6755 and it shows 2/30. All I know is everything JAYCO ships is 2-30's in the FWs.

Reference Onan A-1425 spec sheet. I tried to copy the link but the forum won't recognize it. Just Google Onan A-1425.

At least now you know the 5500 can be either. My point from the beginning.

No, the * clearly states in the notes that the 6755 is the current EVAP spec which is required after Jan 2011 for towed trailers.

Couldn't tell ya man. They exist and are still sold new and used. The OP also is interested in the LP and it's available in 30/30 and 30/20 as well. Believe what you want. I'm completely done with you. I should of known cause you tired to prove me wrong on the Onan exhaust piping too. Two strikes and you're out Mr. Grumpy. Have fun man.

I have the Onan 5500 LP version with a 20/30 breaker combo. It runs both 15k ac's at the same time just fine. I do not have a residential fridge. I also have not tried to use the microwave with both of them running. Mine will not run the heat pump. It throws the 20amp breaker on the generator.

You could swap your genset leads to put the 30 amp breaker onto the leg your heat pump is on. Typically the 30 is on L1 and the 20 L2. L1 if wired correctly would have all your critical loads while L2 would be the unnecessary loads.

My 5500 with 30/20 runs both ac, converter at high output, ceiling fan and RV fridge on electric. Haven't tried to load more than that. My surge/voltage protector tells me how many amps I'm drawing on each leg so I'm able to monitor my usage. When I did the break in I had trouble getting enough load for the 75% load.

To the original poster, if you decide to go with gasoline, I recommend the Onan 5500 EFI. It has electronic fuel injection. No carb to gum up and such. It is available in two models, 30/30 breakers and 30/20 breakers. Models 600 and 1273.

Thank you to everyone for the advice and opinions. I believe I will go with gasoline and a 30/30 breaker. Looks like I should go with EFI EVAP in either a 5500 or 7000 depending on the best price at the time of purchase.

This is truly the most informative 5th wheel forums I have found and I like that it is focused on Jayco brands.

Very wise choice going with EFI. I extremely dislike anything gasoline but if I had to, I'd only go with fuel injection.
