Help!! Major Hitch issue has us hung up in Ogden!

Help?
We hit Ogden Thursday night and ever vigilant Wife noticed front cap seemed lower than usual in relation to Pin Box. Unhitched and setup, then investigated.

Weld on either side of the frame members that the pin box bolt to are cracked about 1/3 of the way up. Desperately looking for local weld shop/RV repair shop preferably with mobile capabilities - kinda worried about moving it?

I suspect 10,000 miles over less than perfectly smooth roads (Alcan Hwy to Florida via East Coast, on the way home now after MS,LA,TX, NM, and now UT) in the last 2 months part of the problem, but also thinking I better go with a cushioned pin box of some sort.......as soon as I get welds repaired.

Thoughts? advice?

Sorry to hear of you problem. I just did a Google search "Ugden UT welding shop". Appears to be a number of welding shops in the area. Noticed two in their names say mobile. "All B&D Mobile Welding" and "Alweld Mobile Welding-Ronie"

Good luck.

Take pics and keep receipts. Get it welded and contact JAYCO when you get home they may reimburse you. I have heard of them covering frame failures past the two yr warranty period.

Research the pin boxes. We have had good service from MorRyde. My first one was shipped to me at home and I installed it. Easy to bolt on.

Found a shop that will do it for me tomorrow, thankfully! Will only be a couple days behind if this works out.

So now I'm going to try to locate a Mor Ryde cushioned Pin Box........
any more opinions good/bad about going to that type of set up?

Cushioned Pin Box availability

Have called every RV dealer in about 100 mile radius of where we are (Ogden UT) and along our route through Idaho and Montana.

Learning that apparently no one actually stocks these cushioned Pine Boxes. Am looking for the MORryde unit, but even Reese don't seem to be instock. All are special order.

Has that been everyone's general experience?
Looks like I'll have to wait til I get home.......................

I bought mine direct from MorRyde and had it shipped to me. You can have it drop shipped to a local trucking company and pick it up yourself and save some money on local delivery.

Angry Major Hitch issue in Ogden! - Update.............

Found a talented and helpful welder yesterday who agreed to do the job for us today. At first he and I just cut out some access hatches from the underside of the front cap. Fortunately from that opening we could see a WAY bigger problem, and ended up pulling the whole front half of the underside down.

Every connecting frame member's welds were broken and the pax side main side beam was BROKEN at the front where it connects to the front cross member. VERY disturbing.

So we ground every old weld down, and re welded, then added 45 deg gussets at each main beam corner (8) plus a flat bar brace on a 45 between the pin box frame and the main frame on each side.

9 hours later (him welding and me grinding) we got 'er done! And I'll tell you it's a thing of beauty! Well, accept for all the fiberglass I now have to replace.....

When I get a chance I'll upload some photos' if anyone is interested. Also I posted this under 5th Wheel even though I have a TH, because I think it might be applicable to any Pin Box/Fiver frame?

Although I HOPE no one else out there has or have had this problem, but any comments or advice would be welcome.

I'm trying to figure out how this happened so I can avoid future problems.

It's good to hear you've got the repair in hand. the damage you describe sounds awful. I'd like to see the pics when you have a chance to post. Kudos to the welder!

The #3 pic looks like a fresh tear but the others look older with some rust in the breaks. Have you hauled some really heavy toys and are you the original owner?

I believe you are right that the Break in the frame is fresh, likely happened the day we discovered the problem or shortly before. The rest were older separations of the welds themselves.

I'm the 3rd owner, I know the second owner barely used it and didn't haul any toys.
Don't know about the first owner.

I'm hauling a SxS atv, which is why I think the final break came about.
HOWEVER, I'n not overloaded, and well within the GCVW rating and the Garage rating.
When I bought the TH, it had a goose neck adaptor on it, which I promptly had removed, and I'm towing with a B&W rollover/Companion.

The way the welds were all stressed and separated from the bottom, I wonder if the goose neck adaptor had anything to do with the issue? Or is the design of the front frame members just not adequate?

I'm tempted to have a structural engineer look at it for me when I get home.
Any thoughts?

Goose Neck Most Likely the Culprit

Unfortunately you will most likely discover that the goose neck system was the major contributor to the breaks. Most 5th wheel frame manufacturers will not warrant their frames for that arrangement because of the unique stresses placed on the frame compared to a conventional 5th wheel hitch. If a manufacturer were to permit a goose neck you would want to get it in writing from a management person in the frame company with details on the warranty.

Hope your new welds hold well.
