If you are going as far taking it to a hitch shop, might want to think about just replacing it with a 2" receiver and then buying any of the dozens of racks/platforms already engineered and on the market.

This what did, the factory rack came off with 8 bolts I believe. Even Jayco got rid of the bike/cargo rack in favor of a 2" receiver.

My custom fabricated, frame to frame welded, receiver cost ~$300 -- well worth it.

Virtually ALWAYS room for improvement. One of the greatest forces on earth is the urge to improve upon what someone else did!

Here's another: The arm that broke is supported on the bottom by a surrounding tube. The hole for lock pin holding the arm in the extended position is very near the end of the support tube. All the loads (static and dynamic) are concentrated at the end of the support tube (at the fulcrum Ustabslim mentioned).

If a locking mechanism was further away from the end of the support tube, no hole would be needed where the weight and bouncing forces are the greatest (at the fulcrum).

With the existing design and hole placement, adding a short, solid metal 'plug' in the arm extending a ways (several inches) on both sides of the hole would help distribute the loads on the arm away from fulcrum and the hole in the arm.

Of course, then you have the issue Ustabslim raised "Where is the weakest link now?"

All the above tips are good ones.

Another idea I have been kicking around in addition to moving the hole farther away from the back end, is to reduce the distance it is pulled out by drilling the hole in the sliding tube farther out. I only carry 2 bikes on mine and do not need it extended the full length.

This would reduce the strain from the bouncing force. I am also trying to find out who makes this for Jayco. Is it Lippert? They seem to own every other company in the RV business.

By shortening the pull out distance, you certainly gain some strength. If you drill the hole "farther out", you might give some thought to drilling horizontal, keeping in mind the fabrication tips presented in this thread.

IMHO, this factory rack is really only suitable for bicycles. To call it a cargo tray is stretching the truth.

I have been using mine for 4 bikes. I will take a good look at it in the spring. Maybe running a ratchet strap to the ladder might help the bounce..

At least it will be dragging behind instead of in someone's windshield.
Wait, the ladder will also be ripped off?

Got my new hitch put on today. I think it is going to make bringing the bikes so much easier. I am going to swap out the current bike carrier I have with the one on this link ( http://www.kotulas.com/deals/garage-and-auto/scooters-and-bikes/2in1-cargo-carrier-with-4bike-rack-500lb.-capacity )
Now the pictures of the new hitch. They basically took the existing 2x4 piece that was from Jayco, then welded a the cross bar for the receiver to that, and added a angled piece to the 2x4 piece just because. They also welded the receiver to the stock bumper to make everything tie together. I will have to relocate the rear-view camera I had to a different spot, but that is the easy part.

I removed the sliding part of my slide out carrier and took it to a locally respected Hitch Shop. They cut a 2' piece of 1" 11ga square stock, slid it in on both sides centered over the Clevis pin. Welded it in place and drilled the hole thru the new piece.
This doubles the thickness at the place Dzwiss carrier broke.
I feel better!

Jayco cargo tray/bike carrier issue

Most engineers and people who do this say it is less stress drilling the hole top down rather than sideways.

Need to tell that to all the makers of trailer hitches.

I think there are several reasons for that.
1. The size and thickness of a receiver make it much much stronger than 11 ga stock.
2. The pin would interfere with many auto truck due to clearance making them unable to be universal.

I don't have anything to back this up other than comments from people with experience.

Got my cargo/bike rack last weekend. It is really heavy. Probably close to the same weight as all four of my bikes. I think it is going to work out great. I have my rear camera pointing just under it so I can keep an eye on everything. I had my wife follow me and went over some railroad tracks. She said she couldn't really see it moving much. The bikes do move side to side pretty good, but they can only move one way until the wheel holder stops them. No way they can fall off, but I will probably wrap the really long strap that comes with the rack around each bike frame. I will be traveling from Phoenix AZ to San Diego Ca in a few weeks so if anything changes with my opinion, I will update this thread.

I guess I have seen way too much "stuff" on rear carriers being bounced to death to ever use one regardless of how strong it may be. My 5'er came with a bike rack to use in the factory receiver. I never took it out of the box and sold it. My 5'er is way too long and has too much movement that far back for me to ever trust any type of rear carrier.

I carry a Playstation 3 with me and over a few hundred miles it fell through one of the rear cabinet shelf bottoms. The self material actually failed under the weight being bounced around. I used the old broken piece as a guide and cut a new piece of 1/4" plywood to replace it. Works great.

I would love to have the ability to put a few things on a rear carrier but I just can't do it.

I hear you. I will be keeping a close eye on it with the camera. I am not really worried about losing the bikes, except I don't want them killing someone behind me. That's really my biggest fear. I also have a blue tote and will mostly be putting that on when we go on long trips.

All we carry in our factory cargo tray/bike rack is our Barker tote and a storage container that holds wood blocks for the stabilizers. Probably 20lbs max. Click image for larger version

Just a update on my modification to beef up the OE bike carrier.

Since having additional steel added to beef up the slide out bars, we have towed almost 1000 miles and it appears to be stronger. I feel not flexing when I stand my big 210lb body on it as before and see no signs of metal fatigue.

Mine survived another season in stock form. Looking to pull her down to Florida next month with just 2 bikes on it.
