Smile Keeping slides open or closed

If you won't be traveling for a four to five week period is it best to close up the fifth wheel?

We leave ours out when stored at home as we are in it a lot.

X2. Helps protect the rubber slide out seals exposed to sun and weather.
We have enough room to move around inside out trailer even with the slide fully retracted. (That was a big plus for this model of trailer)

I have friends that keep their RV at a CG on a monthly basis and they keep the slides out all the time.

I do not think it matters. Lots of seasonals leave them out all summer. I have never heard of any issues.

Also protects the slide out roofs while in and keeps them from getting dirty. Seals and sealant are protected. No snow load on the slides. Lots of pros on keeping them in when not being used.

We do seasonal. Once a month we close it and reopen it. We were advised by the dealer to do this so that the rubber seals don't get stuck to the camper

I am a seasonal and slides are out for 6 months. My dealership did tell me to run them every 2 months and to use RV Slide Foam Conditioner on the rubber caskets. The slide rails or tracks should be lubed with slide lube at least once a season too. If you install slide awnings, that will help keep the slide tops clean especially if you are on a treed site. If I plan on not being at the RV for an extended time, I will bring the slides in.

What specific dry lube do u use? I guess you have no issues with it tracking into and on the camper floors. Also, are y'all using anything on the swintek tracks?

I use this on the slide seals Protect All 40015 Slide-Out Rubber Seal

and this on the slide 'tracks' at the bottom of the slide out. Liquid Wrench RVL512/6PDQ RV Dry Lubricant

My manual says I don't need to lube those at all, but it made a positive difference when I did.

If u have a schwintec slide there are videos of lubing the gear gib. I do that than spray blaster dry lube on the schwintec tracks and underneath pull down the seal and spray the rollers. Than I spray the underside where the rollers run. I also use dry lube on the gear driven slide metal racks. Also pull down the bottom seal and spray dry lube along the entire length. Ur slide rubs over the bottom rub rail (nylon type strip) when it comes in. Than like said I either use seal conditioner or aerospace 303 protectant on all seals.
Dry lube does not attract dirt and sand like oily lives due.

What exactly is a schwintek slide? How do I know if I have them? My slides have big teeth underneath, looks like black iron, and they also have these aluminum looking thin tracks on the side of them.

The one slide with the square iron rod with teeth under is electric gear driven. Use dry lube on that and pull down the bottom seal and spray dry lube all along behind the seal.
The slide with the aluminum rails along the outside sides is schwintec. That is the one you use crc power lube with PTFE on the gibs only. You can use dry lube on the alum tracks and underneath on the rollers. Use a stiff brush to clean out any stuff that gets into the aluminum gear track. Just google lubing schwintec RV slides and watch the videos. And keep all your slide seals lubed.
U can do everything right and still have a failure but u will notice a smooth less moanin slide

U will be amazed at how much sand and dirt gets under the bottom seal

Thanks Rock.. My smaller bedroom slide looks to indeed be a schwintek. I watched a couple of videos on it. One that was interesting to me showed how to reset the timing on both motors. I noticed last weekend that with my side fully extended, one side stopped about about 2" from full extension. I'll have to try the in and out 8-10" a few times (3 minimum) to reset the gears to zero point.

If not using for that period of time I pull them in. We normally leave them out if there is only a week between trips
