kitchen sink and counter top flaw

We purchased a 2014 Jayco Eagle 31.5 RLTS in September. This is our 3rd fifth wheel and we thought we were well rehearsed when coming to look and then buying new. Well anyway not to get long winded here is the problem: You stand up at the kitchen sink and wash dishes you have either your head hitting the cabinet above the sink or you have to slouch down and over to wash at the sink. Now we have been in touch with our Dealer and he has been in touch with the District Rep for Jayco. All I can say is I don't think I am getting much sympathy from them yet. Our dealer wrote to the Rep and the dealer asked him "THATS BAD, THAT MAKES FOR AN UNHAPPY CUSTOMER, YOU PEOPLE DONT WANT TO MANY OF THEM DO YOU?" The Reps response was "Absolutely not...but from a warranty standpoint, there is nothing wrong. To be honest, this model is one of our most popular, and this is the first I've heard of this complaint. So, for us to give money for something that isn't broke isn't going to happen." Part of the ending has to do with a solution given by the dealer and the Rep talking about paying for the repair. Anyway, I am looking for anyone that has purchased a Jayco Eagle 31.5 RLTS that has this same problem! As the rep has said this is the first he has heard of this. So I am asking all the 31.5 RLTS Eagle owners to come forward so we can make a case to Jayco about this design flaw. The rep talks about repairing this under warranty and said there is nothing wrong. But the design is terrible and I know every one of you that owns one of these has the same problem and you have either not noticed it yet, ( hard to fathom that) or just think there is nothing you can do about it. So please help.
I will post pics if there seems to be a need
Thanks for listening and your help!!!

Mine's an old dog but I'm continually bashing my head into overhead cabinets. Had two 5ers and a motor home before and never hit my head so much in any of them.

I figured it's the comeuppance of all the times my Dad said someone should knock some sense in that head

I'm curious.. Is the issue that you want Jayco to fix it, or are you looking for ideas as to how to improve the situation? I looked at the model online and it definetly has a really dumb long cabinet in front of the sink. However, why don't you remove the long cabinet and replace it with some narrow shelves the same colour of the cabinets, or order a shorter cabinet. Jayco makes the same colour cabinets for all their units and I know from experience that you can order parts from any camper as we have had a couple of things on our trailer that were pretty dumb in terms of design, and had to do this.

Pics may help us see the problem.

That looks bad. It seems like it could be replaced with two like the one beside the microwave, and the problem goes away.

Bill,

I don't have the same model Jayco, but I did notice that awhile back you inquired about the 31.5RLTS floorplan in another thread and did get some responses from members with the same model. Just thought, if you fall short on replies from folks with a 31.5RLTS in this thread, you may consider sending a PM to members in the following thread for their feedback:

Reference thread: http://www.jaycoowners.com/showthrea...755#post146755

Not directly related, but the medicine cabinet in my '05' Eagle bathroom was a little low and made it a little awkward for me to use the sink. Being 6'-4" didn't help, but in my case I was able remove and re-mount the cabinet higher which worked for me.

It doesn't look like you have any less headroom than I have in my 2003. Maybe we are used to having a clear overhead in our stick homes? I whack my head occasionally, but not enough to do major surgery on the rig

Looks like the real issue is the sink was set to far back against the wall.
Counter should be replace with the sink moved as far forward as the cabinet will allow.

Or you could get arm extenders...

That does look close with that low cabinet there. I guess many trailers have something that does not work well. With ours it was the TV location. Over the dinette in a cabinet, you have to crane your neck to look at it from the couch. No good. I move it down onto the dinette for viewing, much closer to eye level.

I'd probably hit my head too. You don't see many houses built with a full size cabinet over the sink...

Correct. If the cabinet over the sink needs to be this tall, it should be more shallow. Of if it needs to be this deep, it should be not as tall. If this were done in a residential setting the designer/salesperson would be replacing the cabinet with the correct size. 35 years in the cabinet and construction business and I've seen that as the only solution.

We love our 31.5 RLTS. I have same complaint with the cabinet issue. My solution is I don't wash dishes. My loving wife takes care of it. It's uncomfortable for me to stand there and wash. Other than that we love the floor plan.

I understand the problem your having but a lot of the problem your having is a result of the cabinets being too tall or too deep here over the sink, but to be honest, my wife and myself do not have this problem because we are both under 5'8'' so the solution to this is maybe just have a shorter person due the dishes!!!

We have the same unit as you. I know exactly what you speak of.. My perception is that because there is no recess for your feet to slip under the kitchen sink counter, it makes you bend over and your head is more likely to hit the overhead cabinets. I've always teased the DW that this was a perfect example of why women were made with small feet so that they were more comfortable in front of the sink. It would not be a big deal to cut the cabinets under the double doors and leave an area of a couple inches high that would allow your feet to slip under those doors. I've actually pondered that project.. The problem for us is that we've already used up that area with boxed can good that fit very neatly right in that area!! I think the real difference is that it's just a minor annoyance to us. Where it seems to be a lot bigger problem in your mind. I personally don't want any different cabinets in our unit. I'm 5' 10". The DW is 5'6". Your height may be more of an issue.

I see it as a design flaw. They should have never put full size cabinets over the sink.

If they didn't put full cabinets in that area, there would not be enough convenient storage in the kitchen. You call it a design flaw.. OK. I would much rather have the storage needs then the inconvenience of having my head close to the cabinets while I wash dishes. Again in our opinion it's only a minor problem.
I can clearly see why Jayco would balk on doing anything. If you buy a car that you bang your head in when you get in or out. Is it the fault of the manufacturer???? Who bought the car??? I certainly can sympathize with the buyers plight but truthfully, most of us that have this unit don't find this to be a big deal. If I had to buy another unit today, it would be the exact same thing except that I would put in thermapane windows.
