LP gas alarm going off

Anyone ever had a problem with the LP gas alarm going off? I was camping last weekend and even with the propane tanks turned off my gas alarm went off in the middle of the night both nights.

And the alarm is right below my daughters bed, so it scared her pretty badly.

Ours went off 1 night last week also at 2:30 in the morning , no smell of propane and hooked to shore power so low voltage wasn't a issue. The best I can figure or at least I'm hoping that it was the Axe Body Spray my son sprayed after his shower a couple of hrs. earlier. Done some research and found some aerosols could set them off. This happened on the 1st of 6 nights , I wouldn't let him use the Axe spray any more and it didn't happen any other night.

Do you have pets? If so, don't put your pet food anywhere near the alarm. Especially dog food. I wouldn't even have it in the camper. It emits a gas that will set that alarm off.

Sometimes they get old and need to be replaced. I believe that they can fail after around 6 years. Some keep working for a longer period.

Check the "replace by" date on the unit. When my 5'er was new it had an expired detector in it. I guess Jayco was using some old inventory and I'm not blaming Jayco. It is certainly possible that the manufacturer of the detector shipped old stuff to Jayco. Either way, Jayco replaced it under warranty. The replacement had on it, rather than a "replace by" date, a "replace 5 years after putting in service".

Either way, check the unit for a time for it to be replaced. The do get old.

CO Detector

My DW's hair spray will set it off in seconds.
She now runs the bathroom fan before, during and after spraying.
Seems to have solved problem and prevented some agitation!

I didn't know those had expiry dates on them... I'll have to take a look, but since my trailer is a 1998 I would assume I'm well past the due date.
I do know that raid will set it off, as well as what ever cleaning product my wife uses.
We have a cat, but he doesn't come camping

Did you leave any old tennis shoes around it, those will set it off too.

Yep, my gd set it off two weeks ago by using spray sunscreen in the TT. Any of the aerosol sprays might do it depending on what the propellant is.

I had an eight year old LP gas alarm that started going off for no apparent reason. I even shut the gas off at the tanks, aired the RV out for over an hour with a massive squirrel-cage whole house fan blower, reset the alarm several times, and it still kept going off.

I replaced it and had no problems with it after that. Sometimes just age alone makes them need replacement.

I just got home from a 5 day camping trip and I checked the gas detector while I was at the campground and the expiry date was illegible, but the manufacture date was still there... May 1998, safe to assume it is done.

Well ours went off again night before last for no apparent reason at all so I disconnected the power supply I'm done with it. Everybody else in the seasonal site section of the campground has done the same.

Our propane sensor went off and after the third time we found that a knob on the range had been bumped slightly on when the stove was wiped down after dinner. Propane is heavy and goes straight to the floor.

What kind of dog food emits that gas you refer to ? The reason I ask is that our dog eats Ol' Roy brand soft beef & cheese, and her dish is directly under the LP gas alarm, and it has never gone off. Also did not know that there is an expiration date on the alarm - our trailer is a 2004, we are second owners, and it probably has never been replaced. Green light is on, but maybe that doesn't mean much.
