Major factory error on new trailer!

We picked up our new 27.5 rlts on Friday and camped in it over the weekend, when we were packing up and getting ready to leave, while retracting the main slide, it caught on the the top and started to pull hard and then there was a large popping sound. I knew then something was not right, so I finished retracting the slide, hitched up and took it to the dealer. I figured it was just an adjustment issue, come to find out, the hole for the slide was cut out to small! So now they say the slide has to come out and they are going to cut into the top header of the opening to take out an inch, for clearance. So we left the trailer in Michigan at the dealer, and drove back home to Missouri. I am so disappointed after spending all this money on a new trailer to have something like this happen. Where the **** is the QC at Jayco? Maybe such a thing does not exist anymore!

I would not be happy. Did you have any issue with the slide when you did the PDI,or when you extended the slide at the campsite?
I would contact Jayco before I let a dealer start cutting 1'' out of my trailer.

I would demand Jayco replace the entire trailer with a new one

I'm with the others about cutting the header solution. These are minimal sized headers to begin with....cutting an inch off the one in place could severely decrease its load or span capacity. I think I would contact Jayco direct for their solution......this sounds like a dealer good ole boy shade tree mechanic solution.

If the hole wasn't sized properly from the get go....how did they get it in in the first place? How did the dealership get it back in after the walk through at pick up? Sumpin don't sound right Lucy.....

DO NOT let them cut into it! Let Jayco determine that. If it has a warranty, Jayco may void it if unauthorized repairs are made. Protect your warranty!

I believe these openings are cut from a pattern or templet so I question that 1". I would get that opening size from Jayco and measure it myself before they start cutting your trailer up. The outside trim pieces are pre cut and they wouldn't fit if it was off by 1" during the assembly process.

Jayco uses much beefier headers than competitors due. I'm not sure I agree that they are minimally sized to start out.

That being said, I would NOT allow a dealer to start hacking away at my trailer. Contact Jayco IMMEDIATELY and take it to another dealer for a second opinion.

I have to agree. The slide-out wall is cut out and follows that unit all through production. The "header is part of the wall when the aluminum frame is welded and could not be built "too small" they are welded on a jig.

Something is not right with the dealer's comments and that problem would have occurred when the slide was retracted after assembly as well as during the PDI. If the unit is in MICH I would definitely take it to the factory in Middlebury.

I had numerus Jamming/stalling issues with the main slide on our trailer. Long story short it went back to the factory last summer. They told me the problems were being caused because slide was way out of adjustment. So far it has been working. Although when I look at the way the seals contact the slide, things don't look square. We just hold I breath every time we extend or retract that slide.

The dealer is working with Jayco on this problem, they are not doing any work that Jayco is not authorizing first. I am going to call Jayco to have a talk with them though.

While it's back at the dealer, make sure you can access the manual slide retraction bolt on the door side slide. On ours it was impossible to get to. There was supposed to be a hole in the frame to access it with a socket. I had to cut the hole myself, which was no big deal. Just glad I found that before I needed to use it sometime out on the road.

I have called Jayco twice since Wed., morning, and still have not received a call back from customer support. The dealer says Jayco can not decide how to remedy the problem as of yet. My wife and I saved up for 4 years to purchase this trailer cash outright and to take a 3 month long trip with our daughter this summer before her senior year in high school, and then off to college. We have had to cancel plans and reservations, and right now my anger and frustrations are about to bubble over! I am so sad, and so is my family right now, 4 years of planning, saving and expectations down the drain!

Feel your pain. I am sure Jayco is trying to figure out a good plan to get it fixed.

Did you ask if a loaner was available? Maybe the dealer would lend a used unit for your trip. They usually offer their used units to employees to use on weekends, at least here they do.

Something smells! How did the factory shove it in for transportation to the dealer? How did dealer shove it in when you picked it up? Somewhere in its life, my 2012 Eagle had loosened the two main bolts that are used for vertical adjustment. That caused the slide not to lift up enough as it closed. Top of slide needs to raise, and touch side of unit about one inch prior to bottom. Another thing, almost all mass produced, low skilled worker items are locked in by a jig system. They are peas in a pod, and the whole run would be off. I would advise to first look for another problem then the header!
