New Ram has no shoulder harness in jump seat
Looking for some perspective here, and opinion. Just purchased a brand new Ram 3500. I've owned it for about four hours. With all the research I have done, I never realized that the center jump seat has no shoulder harness. This is where one of my four kiddos will be sitting (all of them ten years old and under).
So I've got that sick feeling. And I'm feeling worse for just discovering that Fords do have a shoulder harness in the middle.
So I'm just wondering about other people's thoughts on this.

I would go back to the dealer and point out this safety issue. If they sell the truck as having a seat, I believe they are violating federal regs if there is no seat belt. I don't think they require a shoulder harness for the front jump seat.
My 2009 Ford F-150 had a lap belt for the center jump seat. Rear center seats are required to have lap and shoulder belts.
Sounds like Fiat-Chrysler may be looking at another investigation and fines. Just like their new Rams with Eco Diesels.

My 2016 F250 has a lap / Shoulder belt but my 2013 F150 only had a lap belt. I did allow my children to sit in the center (front) seat but wasn't very comfortable with it...

I am confident, and I would be willing to place a small wager on it, that Ram trucks are in compliance with federal law regarding seat belts and shoulder harnesses.

You safest option imo is to put the child that's still in a car seat in the jump seat. May not be comfortable for you and the passenger, but the car seat will be secure with just the lap belt.

By car seat I mean a 5-point harness, not a booster seat or such.

This was one of my top reasons for upgrading my TV as my third child was growing out of the 5pt harness and my rear middle seat in my 03 only had a lap belt.
I am an advocate for safety and if it makes you uncomfortable do something about now rather than have it bother you all the time. I would say you have a good reason to discuss with dealer and Ram.

Where would a shoulder belt be attached to keep the jump seat passenger in the seat? Shoulder belts are attached to the door pillars and to the frame behind the back seats. We have had a few trucks over the years and they all had a lap belt only...

I would have to agree ....i'm sure in the future, it will become a manditory part of a truck. Lets face it, when it comes to trucks, the Blue Oval seems to be always one step ahead! (aka aluminum body)

Oh boy, I remember in the 60's when we had to buy them at a service station for $7.50 and install them ourselves. Shoulder belts were not invented yet except in airplanes.
My 06 F350 has lap belts in the jump seats only back and front. Now you got me curious. I'll look closer in the morning. Not a problem with us because we never have used them. Mostly only 4 passengers.

Best place for children is in the back seats. The force of air bags exploding frontal could do plenty of damage to young children. Just my opinion. We also have a 2015 RAM 2500 and just got a recall notice in the mail yesterday about occupant restraints. It is only for 2015 models. The notice number is
T25/NHTSA 17V-302. Seems like it is only a software upgrade.

This is correct, but the jump seat has no air bag so the car seat can be installed there. The info I have shared came from my wife as we just discussed this, she is certified through Safe Kids which is NHSTA for car seat safety, my '12 ram has the center concile and I want to eventually replace it with a jump seat.

Well, I basically screwed myself because I am not willing by to compromise on safety. I just can't BELIEVE after all the research I did on the RAM that I didn't figure this out until driving off the lot as the new owner.
I am spending today at a combined Dodge / Ford dealership working out a trade in of my "used" truck with 58 total miles on it :-(

New Ram has no shoulder harness in jump seat
GMC has a shoulder belt for front center occupants. My brother in law bought a 2016 2500 last year and as a family of 6 they use all the seats.
Correction: the GMC doesn't come with a shoulder belt for the jump seat. My mistake. When my brother in law spoke about it to me previously it turns out he was talking about an aftermarket setup.

You might consider returning the truck to the dealer and pay for the mileage. Check since this could be under the federal law that allows returns of large purchases. You should come really close to breaking even on the Ram.

Geese, don't know why it resubmitted my last post.
Anyhow, there is no law in Georgia that requires a dealer to take back a transaction. It falls on my shoulders, and I accept that, as crappy as that may be.

Wire, that stinks you didn't catch until after purchase but I don't blame you. I wouldn't have my child riding with just a lap belt either.

Times sure have changed. I remember standing on the rear hump above the tranny (58 Lincoln Continental Convertible - guarded with curb feelers ) and riding in the open bed of my fathers pickup (56 Studebaker - which he piloted with a suicide knob).

It may be different in other states, but here in Texas, once a vehicle is titled as new, it can't be titled as new again. That means it can't be sold as new again. The next sale of the vehicle will be for several thousand dollars less.

My brother in law just went through this exact same scenario. He had a longhorn with the center console and needed a 6 seater 1-ton for a family of 6. He traded in on a '17 3500 SLT nicely optioned, only to find out that center seat up front had lap belt only.
My '13 F-150 XTR has shoulder harnesses for each of the 6 seats, a feature very important to me.
I absolutely cannot believe that in this day and age the manufacturer can claim safe seating without a shoulder harness. I have never been a supporter of Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep and this issue that arose with the seat belts drove it deeper.
I am unbelievably impressed at the original poster's commitment to the safety of his family despite the financial penalties he faces. Welcome to the wonderful world of Ford, brother!
