Rim on Pinnacle splitting in half

I was traveling on a freeway in San Diego last week and thought I'd blown a tire. Upon Further inspection I found that the rim had sheared off the lug bolts. Once we recovered the rim I found that the rim had split in half. The tire had not blown. Unfortunately when it came apart it hit another vehicle. We purchased the Pinnacle new in May of 2016. Have put about 3000 miles on it.
Has anyone had a similar problem?

Tires were at the correct pressure and I was traveling at 55 mph. I'm really concerned about the remaining 3 rims.

We had a Pinnacle owner post here a few years back, 2011 if memory serves, about broken Pinnacle wheels. I'm thinking it was the spokes actually breaking, nothing to do with lug bolts, but any failure of wheels is big time serious.

I have a friend who had that happen on another brand, but a heavy fiver. I would contact the rim manufacturer with your concerns and they may be able to give you some guidance.

I'd report it to DOT! Also to the dealer, Jayco and the rim manufacturer.

NHTSA, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, asks for reports of vehicle safety defects; they investigate some reports and can order recalls. A wheel disintegrating on a new vehicle is obviously such a defect. Here is a link to their site: NHTSA.

After looking around, I see your rig is still in warranty. I would get in touch with a dealer or Jayco and start the warranty process. I had one develop a pinhole leak and Jayco coordinated a replacement rim thru Tredit, the distributor.

Sure hope it caused no damage. My buddies caused a good bit when it came apart.

What direction did the rim split?

Sheared studs or bolts is usually indicative of improper torque, and alloy wheels are known for loosening over time because the aluminum alloy expands and contracts at different temperatures and rates than the steel brake drum, hub, studs, etc. when lugs fail on alloy wheels the damage is almost always catastrophic to the wheel. It would be nearly impossible for it to have happened the other way around- a soft alloy wheel wouldn't be able to shear 8 hardened studs.

I'm not the original poster but the one I referenced split literally in half. The 2 rim halves, outer and inner were no longer connected together. It was a chrome rim.
