Pics would be great. How high wind do you leave it up. Sounds easy to take down too. Thx

I do this, too. Not worth the risk - I try not to stress any components on any vehicle.

It does seem and little wind will lift it. It's just that we are parked in direct sun and the awning really helps keep the heat inside down. Already running the air during the day here. And it's just going to get hotter. Looking at building a carport for some shade. But in the meantime was hoping I could at least leave it up in 15 to 20 mph winds.

I used painters poles from Home Depot and added some wooden blocks cut to fit roller. Bottom is in a 4x4 with a ratchet strap running from roller to a 2 ft screw in stake with a tension spring. Painters pole is nice since u can drill more holes and adjust it where it fits good

We just re-track the awnings when it starts to get breezy. Also we never leave awnings out if we are gone. Big bucks if they get trashed!Happy Trails

I apply the same thinking to awnings.

I have seen way too many awnings torn up in wind, both automatic and manual to EVER leave one out in high wind. I have seen every type of anchoring system used and all fail when the wind it just right.

Therefore, I NEVER EVER leave my awning out at night (when a storm can pop up that wasn't expected) or anytime severe weather is forecast and I NEVER EVER leave my site with the awning out. Pushing a button is much easier and a lot safer.

My awning survived perfectly fine 3 weeks ago in a 60+ mph thunderstorm blow. No damage and my nerves were fine also.

It is one thing just camping for a few days to roll up everyday. But when u r long term and still working is different. I watch the weather and have taken my poles down twice in only five months. My set up is about as secure as the slider toppers to leave out 95% of the time.

Be careful with homemade awning contraptions. It negates the auto dump feature. If you get a unattended downpour the weight of pooling water can snap the awning tube like a twig, or rip the fabric. Don't ask me how I know this.

My carefree does not have auto dump feature. I keep both awnings slanted down and angled to one side.

I used pvc pipe and made a sliding affair. Outer pipe is 1 1/4 inches and the inner pipe is 1 inch. If you can secure a 1 inch split ring you can than simply adjust the height by sliding the inner pipe up or down and clamp it tight.. The split ring is the hardest part to find. Check one of the home centers.
