Smell only when flushing

Ok I have read many many posts on the topic of black tank smells. I have a brand new 345BHTS that is a week old. I am having trouble fighting the oder I het hit with when I flush the tank. I do not smell a thing until I actually press the peddle and open the valve.

I have 1/3 filled with water and 3 of those lavender packs and I still smell sewer smell once I flush. I have read about the vent but my unit is new. And also when looking in the toilet the pipe goes down then 45s off to the side. My question is: is it normal to get a smell when flushing. Heck the gas does rise and my toilet does dump into the top pf the tank (i would assume) so how is the vent pipe supposed to remove all smells and no smell rise up the the pipe to the inside of the toilet?????

I put severl gals in tank. Use porta packs. Fill bowl before use

Am I missing something?

I get that only if the vent fan is on. It has to pull air from somewhere, lol. And to say it only smells while flushing your poop must not smell because I get a smell long before I flush. hahahaha

I haven't experienced this first hand, but one of the things you didn't mention was your exhaust fan: If it is exhausting air out of the trailer, in the bathroom or any other room, it can pull in air from the black tank. Check that. If you can, try reversing the fan to blow outside air into the trailer.

I'm sure others will be along soon with other ideas to help.

Another vote for exhaust fan. Is it on?

I had the same issue with my new trailer. I decided to go with plenty of water and no chemicals because so many people say you don't need chemicals. Our third time out, boy did things stink when we flushed. I dumped the tank and rinsed it really good with the black tank flush (filled it multiple times and dumped). I then added some water and chemicals. The smell is now gone. I believe that water only may work for full timers, but for weekend warriors like me, I believe that chemicals are a good thing. Give your tank a really good flush, add some water and chemicals and you should be good to go. Also, as others have said, you don't want the fan pulling air while flushing...

Based on your description, it sounds like your black tank valve is closed (good!), so it's not coming up through the actual sewer.

I'd have to agree with the others that said exhaust fan. If you have some windows open in your trailer and the wind is blowing just right(wrong), that could potentially cause the similar effect of having slightly negative air pressure in your trailer, so the black tank air comes up through the toilet valve when open.

If you replaced your vent cap with something like this
http://www.amazon.com/Camco-40595-Wh.../dp/B003P64XU4
It would help make sure that the negative air pressure is inside the tank and therefore air goes down into the toilet instead of up.

We usually have a roof vent and a window cracked open for condensation/fresh air reasons, and the only time I noticed it in our old trailer was when the bathroom exhaust fan was on. I got in a habit of turning it off, flushing, then turning it back on.

Then I suggest that you dump and flush the tank really good. Ad some water and chemicals and you should be good to go.

Our current 5th and the previous HTT did not have sewer smells unless the fan was on. I would suspect the vent is blocked or nearly so.

Well actually the last 2 flushes have not been bad. Did a full flush yesterday and filled 1/3 with water and 3 chem packs. The forst few uses stunk but now it seems good.

Went on the roof and only see one vent over my bathroom. Do gray and black share a vent? Also the vent caps are screwed into the roof of the RV. And I cant really get my fingers up under it to feel an opening.

Had the same issue last season. Fan on or off the blow back during flushing was shmelly!. Using the black tank rinse did nothing. A couple of pails of water down the toilet cleared it up. It moves the solids to the exit. Always try to do the double flush to help the problem.

You might try some of the green packs. I have also talked to people who use a product called Happy Camper and they swear by it. I haven't used it cuz I use the green packs and have not had any "real" problems with it.
