spare tire

No this is not another question about tires, I was just wandering as I was checking the air pressure in the tires before our trip today. How many people check the air in their spare tire. Just a friendly reminder.

On the checklist already for both the TT and the TV.

One thing I did not realize when I took possession of my Yukon was that it originally had C rated tires. It had been upgraded to E rated at some point, but the spare was not.
STS caught the discrepancy for me and replaced the (dried out anyway) spare with my best old tire when I replaced all four. They have earned a lifetime customer.

Someone posted a month or so ago a tire pressure story. Checking the spare for the first time he discovered there was 20# in it. I lowered mine before the my next trip and guess what, 20#!
We've owned the 5th less than a year and I suspect that's pretty common from the factory.
If you've never checked the spare, I'd put it pretty high on the "do" list.

Well, I guess when it is buried underneath the unit, it makes it a little more difficult. Must admit, I only checked it once, when it was on the dealer's lot and easier to get underneath. Will have to make a more concerted effort. I am good about checking the tires on the unit and must be living right as I have never had a blowout on a Jayco unit I have owned. Probably just jinxed myself!

Mine was low when I brought it home (just like all my tires ). I guess I'm a little luckier than some. My spare is under the trailer up front (like under the bed area) but I don't have to drop it to check the pressure, I can just reach around it and pass the gauge hose through the wheel spoke. Every couple times I have it home, I dig out my "creeper" and roll around under the trailer for a while checking things out from front to back. I check it then and it's held air ever since I got it up to proper inflation. If it was on the back bumper, I'd probably check it when I check my other tires (which is every time I use it) just as a matter of habit.

Mine is also easy to get at, but even if it was a bit of a pain, I'd be checking it before every trip. You don't need it until you need it. Seems to me that's even more important for those big 5vers.

Of course it's important to check air pressures before hitting the road but why not also carry a small air compressor to make sure you have additional air if you need it? And of course, a TPMS is good insurance.

It's too bad that TPMS's are so expensive. But, yes, I'm surprised if an RVer isn't carrying a compressor. I mean, what do you blow up all the inflatables with!?

I don't carry an air compressor. Generally the air pressure doesn't change from when I check at home to when it is time to leave the campground. If it does, I get air at the gas station.

Getting air at gas stations around here sucks major monkey junk! By that, I mean it's terrible, it's expensive assuming the service station pump is even working. We would be better off trying to fashion a straw to get air into a tire than depending on a service station to have air. A 12v air pump is a VERY smart item. I don't have one yet, but it's on my short list.

I find that most gas station compressors will not provide 80psi. Unless you are at a truck stop, you will need a compressor.

I have never had that problem. More likely to have that problem with a portable compressor unless it is a very heavy and expensive one

you probably have close to 3K in cargo capacity... I have less than 500

Taking my unit in tomorrow for some warranty work. Will have all the tires checked before I leave out. Also want to get under there while it is on concrete and check access to slide out motors.
