Towing with passengers

When we were in the process of purchasing our 5th wheel, we were told that it's legal to tow with passengers in the tow vehicle as long as you have radio communication. Our 5th wheel does have a good solid connection with safety chains and e-brake, along with good towing characteristics and we use GMRS radios. All that said, I've laid out the pros/cons from my newbie perspective here for feedback.
Pros: Hang out in trailer and attempt to relax/sleep with potty for emergencies.
Cons: No AC running, trailer bouncing around on the road and potential for motion sickness - not to mention you're screwed if you ever get in a wreck.

I think a more plausible use would be to pull over for emergency potty breaks or overnight stays. Has anyone done this? Feedback appreciated! - Thanks

This topic came up several years ago. Somewhere in the back of my OLD mind I'm remembering that I discovered that (in my state) allowing passengers to travel in the towed trailer is legal. In todays world, there may be a seatbelt issue. Every time I think of this topic, I am reminded of the show, "The Long Trailer" where Lucy decided to ride in the trailer and prepare the meal. It didn't work out as planed.
With all that said, I would not do it. Not a legal or illegal issue, but a safety issue.

Just my thoughts

I heard is like a 7 magnitude earthquake in the trailer going down the road. I would think one would get motion sick.?

Legal or not I would never do it. Watch any of the RV rollover videos on Youtube and tell me its OK to have a family member inside...

I would never consider doing this purely for the safety aspect. I even have a hard time with the motor home design of lap belts on the couch/dinette. I know it's legal but sitting sideways going 100km/h with a table edge up against your organs...

I won't let my dog ride in the trailer, much less humans.

It appears you have already answered your own question.

As for me, I wouldn't dream of of doing something like this.

I know that in Ontario it's illegal ... but legal or not, it's a pretty bad idea. I wouldn't even want to carry a dead body back there, let alone a live one.

LOL, yep.

After seeing how much things can be thrown around at the back end of our trailer I would not want anyone in there, especially kids or pets.

I rode in the back of my dads fifth wheel when I was kid on several occasions. I don't think the ride was too bad, but I am surprised its still legal to do for other reasons. The ride over the pin was pretty smooth. Sitting at the dining room table over the axles, also was pretty smooth. A leaf spring suspension under load rides pretty good. When you get to the back of the trailer past the axles, it bounces pretty good.

I was surprised to learn its legal to ride in a bumper pull trailer in my state. My wife and dog tried it a few weekends ago on a short 45 minute trip. I thought my wife would call and ask to get out after a few minutes, but she was sleeping on the bed when we got home. I know the safety concerns - and that's not why I replied, just wanted to state the ride is likely not what you think its like.

A trailer provides ZERO crash protection to any occupants. In a serious crash, a trailer degrades into toothpicks, sawdust and flying appliances. Imagine what would happen to anyone inside.

Whole lotta nope on riding in the trailer under way. First and foremost being a significant safety concern. I've seen some of those rollover videos, and there's no way someone survives that unscathed, much less even alive. And that's not the only risk. Travel trailers have NO collision protection. Say you're crossing an intersection and someone runs the light and T-bones the trailer. It will come apart like paper, the offending vehicle likely having but scratches in the paint.

Then there's the comfort. Probably up near the tongue would likely be fine, but like was already mentioned, the further back you go, the worse it gets. It also gets pretty hot back there towing down our TX roads in the summer. Wintertime? Maybe not a problem, but definitely not in the summer.

Nope, no way, all riders are safely strapped in up in the truck. Period.

Class a/b/c

What's the difference in this and riding in the back outside the cab of a class A/B/C RV?

There are Seatbelts in Class A's and C's and some although minor, crash protection. It is likely insufficient but better than nothing.

Also, there is no risk of the back of a motor home coming unhitched and breaking free of a TV...

Maybe sometimes. But given that we've had an occasional trip where I hit some crappy section of road and when we arrived at our destination we'd find a cabinet had opened and spilled out it's contents everywhere, I'm not sure I'd want to be laying down and then get bounced on to the floor. Few trailers have shocks and that's what would prevent that from happening. When they hit bumps they can bounce around pretty good.

No way that dude should have been towing that trailer with that vehicle. They probably shouldn't be towing at all given their skill level and not slowing down at all when their trailer started wagging.
