TPMS paid off this weekend

I'm soooooo glad I have a tire pressure monitoring system for my fifth wheel. It paid off this weekend. Turned it on Friday before our weekend trip and one of my "Chinese Bomb Tow Max" tires was at 52 psi, other 3 were at 81 psi. I filled it to 80 psi and off we went. Sunday mid morning turned unit back on and the same tire was down to 60 psi. Used my Viair compressor and filled it back up.

I obviously will be bringing that tire in to be checked. Tires are original to the unit which is only 1.5 yrs old. With about 4500 miles on them. Would like to change all 4 tires, just don't know what to go with. Any ideas?? I would like to stay with 235/80r16 and an 80 psi tire, so I don't have to change out wheels. And also non-Chi-Com (Chinese) would be preferred.

I highly recommend having a TPMS and a quality air compressor. It only took 4 minutes to go from 60psi to 80psi with that Viair compressor.

I think you have to get LT tires to find non-China tires. Just replaced my tow max with Goodyear 614. They were about 3yrs with 7500 mi. 2 failures in a 75 mi stretch and a third where failure was iminent. And YES, TPMS earned its keep twice that day.

Most people on here have talked glowingly about Maxxis tires.. (made in the USA) but I cannot comment on them as they don't appear to be available North of the 49

TPMS paid off this weekend

Mallard a lot of people say to change the valve stems to metal ones . I am thinking of getting one(TMPS) for the pinnacle before our trip out west. Did you change yours ?

I changed mine to metal. I had a problem with the so called "High Pressure stem". Part metal, part rubber. Change them out just for peace of mind, one less thing to worry about.

I believe Maxxis may be made in China but after much research on trailer tires last year, I would not hesitiate to buy another set of Maxxis. 6000 mile trip and not one issue. Can be ordered through Discount Tire.

I must admit to negligence ... I've continued to postpone my inevitable purchase of a TPMS system (mostly because I'm in the process of finding another TV).

Peer pressure did induce me to recently purchase a power management system - and just last month it saved my bacon.

Now even cheaper ... http://www.progressiveindustries.net/#!ems-pt30c/c501

After my last trip I'll never be without a pressure monitor. I bought one from Minder Research and use with rubber stems.

I believe Maxxis are made in various Asian countries. I think Maxxis is based in Taiwan and there is some manufacturing there but I don't think they make them in mainland China. Mine were made in Thailand, IIRC. They've worked fine for me. Over 15K miles on them with no problems (knock on wood). I'd buy them again.

So went to pull my tires for new metal valve stems for the new TST system and first tire off has a bubble. Way to go Tow Max . I will be filing a claim on the network for future customers benefit.

Now I need to get some new rubber. 50+K and they can't put a decent tire on these rigs...Jayco will be hearing from me as well. Better check your tires inside and out is all I am going to say. No confidence in Tow Max product. Sorry to vent, but the TST system is what started it all.

File Complaint About Tires Here http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchSafetyIssues

We can continue to banter back and forth on this forum about XX brand tire failures, or we can actually try to do something about it.

Use the link above to submit your actual failure information.

I did not replace my valve stems to all metal. Thought I might be able to get 2 yrs on them. Will report problem back when I get my tire to the shop this week.

Found the problem. Small nail in inside part of the tread. No valve stem leak. Think this is a sign to go ahead and replace all four with a new set of treads.

On a bigger note. The lug nuts on the 5ver are "S$!T". Two piece lug nuts, the outer piece is almost plastic. One of my lug outers was cracked and another completely separated. There is no excuse for using lug nuts like this. My riding mower has better quality lug nuts than this. I will be replacing all 24 when the tires get changed.

CHECK YOUR NUTS!!!!!!

Which TPMS are you using? How long have you had it?

I'm starting to research TPMS units to see which may be the best to get.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Roc, I'm not Mallard but am happy to say I bought mine from Minder Research and have been pleased with my choice. It's alerted me twice to tire failures. In the first instance the tire threw about 2/3 of its tread and the TM was making noise before the rubber stopped flopping in the roadway behind me. Saved me from damaging the wheel wells I'm sure. The cords hanging out of the remaining carcas make an effective flail and will make short work of anything they can contact.

Interesting coincidence, got an e-mail from Minder Research around lunch time reminding me to send my sensor batteries in for free replacements. They're doing this thru 2018 I think.
