Welding - Electrical Concern

I am needing to weld some brackets to the bumper on our NorthPointe 341 and I'm not sure what I should disconnect/unhook before welding. I don't want to harm any of the electrical goodies in the camper. Is it enough to just turn the battery disconnect off, or, do I physically need to unhook the battery ground cable? What are your experiences with this situation?

I've done lots of welding on motor homes and trailers without any problems. I always made sure the rigs were disconnected from shore power first just in case my welding ground lead came loose, I wouldn't put current through the rig ground. I use a 240V Miller MIG welder.

Always disconnect the battery ground cable(s). That will prevent electrical current to be carried to the electronics.

Leave the battery connected to damp out any possibility of spurious charges.

I agree on disconnecting shore power it eliminate any possibility of welding currents getting into the house's power system.

Other than that, the usual:
Make sure your work clamp has a good clean contact area
Cleaned all paint, rust, etc. from the parts to be welded
Protect any surfaces from sparks and hot slag

I have several welding jobs done on my rig by professional welders. They used their own bonding system and I did nothing to my batteries, I was not on shore power.

Never a problem with anything inside.

I jumped over to a few welding forums and the advise was about the same as here. Some say do remove the battery, some say don't.. You might want to do a google search for yourself and get a better answer.

I think I would agree with Mike - leave the battery connected. It should act like a big capacitor and reduce *some* induced RF current. Even though that one loop would be eliminated, there are still many more inside still connected.

I left my battery connected but disconnected from shore power and had no issues.
