wiring mess

Just a couple photos of the fuse panel for all the slideouts, awning, lights, landing gear etc, that are operated by the remote. Found behind the basement wall. The second is behind the inverter, where the surge guard surge protection is mounted. House keeping with Jayco leaves a lot to be desired. Having an error indication with the voltage meter on the surge protection side so going to have to replace the surge guard.

Already pulled out the stereo(Jensen by the way) to plug in tv audio to the speaker systems. Agree about this mess. The surge guard is 2 years old so not under warranty. It was installed March of 2014. Although the dealer is getting in touch with them to see if anything can be done. Problem has been there for a long time and I just did not do anything about it until now. Power was ok, but surge guard was indicating 90 volts on 1 line. Voltage was fine so I just kept going. Finally decided to do something about it because I was not sure if I still had protection or not as this was a problem with the surge guard unit. So, going to replace it one way or the other.

They will likely offer to sell you another one at a discount. That's what they did with me.
I got a Progressive EMS PT50C somewhere else.

They suck at wiring......

I had to pull out the radio and install the Mic for the bluetooh that they just put in the pack with the books (I have herd that they are now installing it at the factory) and waht a mess. I also looked at the wiring under the bed platform (I have a 31DS) and this will scare you.... Here is some photos that I took while installing the mic.

No waterproof connectors, not even electrical tape. Wires hanging on the exhaust.

Every time I visit this site, my list of things to do gets longer and longer.

Sometimes it IS better not to know what is behind that panel for some of us anal retentives.

Unfortunately, although we spend upwards of $50,000 on a lot of these units and more, they do not come with surge protection. The factory could add this for less than $500 I am sure. The Surge Guard and Progressive EMS are two of the most commonly used surge protection devices. Some are portable and can be used at the pole. I choose the permanent solution, although it was not quite permanent. Maybe it saved my bacon at some point and I did not realize it. The dealer installed my unit and since I have been a faithful customer and brought him a lot of business besides my own, my unit is being replaced for the labor charge. They have been in contact with Surge Guard and Surge Guard may have offered to replace the unit with another like one. In any case, my hats off to TeamRV in Albany, GA and Surge Guard from Clearwater, Fl.

There are a LOT of options that should be offered but are not. You would think that their would be a lot of profit in it instead of giving this business away to third parties.

My conclusion. The cargo capacities are already marginal IMO, and to add these options from the factory would make them so heavy, there would be no cargo capacity left.

And that is why they are not willing to offer them and are willing to allow this extra profit to be forfeited to aftermarket vendors.

I could list about ten items that should be options and it does not take a rocket scientist to come up with your own.

Picked my unit up at TeamRVInc, in Albany, GA yesterday morning. New surge guard in place, replaced by Surge Guard. Also, Surge Guard relocated to behind wall on front basement storage and wire run from there to inverter. Also new satellite outlet installed right next to where receiver sits so can eliminate wiring running from fireplace wall to receiver. Cleaning up some stuff that I just didn't like!

"Unfortunately, although we spend upwards of $50,000 on a lot of these units and more, they do not come with surge protection."

That goes for units costing 3x as much. No reason they should do it.

Most new sales are driven by first timers. They believe it is all about floor plan, and if they go into forums many owners push that notion as well. Most new owners will rebuy very quickly as they find out that what they bought doesn't match their needs and the needs have little to do with floor plan.

More experienced owners are the vast majority of owners buying power protection. When they buy a unit, most of them have motor and suspension on the top of their minds as now they are beginning to learn. They find out the admonishment to do their research walking sales lots and promotional events didn't get er done.

Only more experienced owners think about quality, weight and storage issues, suspension, engine, power protection etc., as the newer buyers think like car buyers.

The industry targets new buyers for who they are as they walk in the door.

An RV service center will make around $3,500 minimum if you have a power problem and those come in regularly. They have no incentive to prevent owners from having problems. I know, I worked for a short period of time as a service advisor and was discouraged from selling power protection devices. The salespeople also did their best to ignore weight issues or telling buyers their tv were not right - let them find out later and buy a new tv was the attitude.

Oh, of course, there are exceptions!

Unit List price $116K wiring done by 10 year olds!

I opened the back of our 2017 Class C Greyhawk to discover a mess. Could not believe my eyes. Who does this kind of wiring? They placed circuit breakers on the floor beneath the water pump and filter! It looked like an eagles nest. Caution to all. The quality control of Jayco is non-existent! Tried to upload photos with no luck.
