15.000 a/c

I am a newbie to the rv scene. My wife and I bought a 2016 Jay flight 267 bhsw. It has a 15.000 btu A/C and I want to buy a generator. Which generator will be best and run everything for this unit.

Congrats on the trailer. Someone will chime in but what do you plan to use in addition to the ac while boon docking? I'd probably want a 3k watt generator but I don't boon dock so can't give you more info. Again many boon dockers here and they will chime in.

I have a 15K A/c unit on the way. I have 2 Powerhorse 2000W genies that I can run in parallel so 4000W demand & 3200W running. I can use just 1 genie if not running a/c. Its the start up that needs the big watts to get it going. I bought 2 because they weigh 47lbs each & I can lift them without killing my back otherwise I could have gotten a Champion 7000W propane or gas powered genie for $800 at Costco today but the damn thing weighs >200 lbs & Db's are 74. The portables Db's are between 54 & 60Db, so they are much quieter in a crowded campsite. I just bought them mostly to start the a/c & charge the battery so even with 3200W it will not run everything so the more watts the better. Just do a search & see what the Watt demands are for all the appliances combined,(microwave is a 1000W alone, A/c guessing 2000-3000 running. lights, oven, TV, slide out, etc. you get the picture.
BOL & enjoy the trailer.

Do some research on running generators in campsites. Many now restrict run times to certain times of the day if you are in a group location.

Running an ac may not be possible even if you have the capacity on the genny. Just saying.

Being a newbie, for what purpose do you want a generator? Most campgrounds won't allow generators throughout the day/night and will have designated quiet hours. For this reason, my family only camps at places that have electric hookups at the minimum.

If you are camping off the grid, quiet hours are defined by you and your guests.

All that being said, a 3500 watt generator should provide enough power for a 15K air conditioner. I have a Champion 4000 watt (3500 constant) generator that I bought as an emergency backup for the house (portable AC, couple lights/fans and refrigerator). I spent about $300 on it. Its not nearly as quiet as a Honda or Yamaha, but not nearly as loud as the traditional open frame contractor series. Champion makes a 3100 watt invertor (58db rating) and a 3500 watt invertor generator (59db rating). My generator is rated at 68db... so about TWICE as loud as the invertors for about 1/3 the price.

If you are looking to boondock by yourself, you can save $600 and buy one like mine. If you plan to camp near other people and need a generator, do everyone a favor and buy an invertor style that is quieter.

Welcome to the forum. Lots of threads on here about generators. I have two 2000k Yamahas as you can see in my signature. If you can afford them or the comparably priced Hondas, they are light weight and quiet and high quality. It takes two to run the air conditioner. Otherwise a 3000k will run your a/c but not necessarily all your other appliances at the same time. The 3000k Honda is quite a bit heavier and the 2400k Yamaha is probably a tad too small. Good luck with your search!

Here's some useful information I came across about amperage draw on A/C units:

For max startup amps on A/C:
compressor amp draw x 2.5 + fan amp draw on high

15KW A/C: 11.4 amps x 2.5 = 28.5 amps + 3.4 amps + 31.9 amps
13.5KW A/C: 9.7 amps x 2.5 = 24.25 amps + 3.4 amps =27.65 amps

These numbers are for my Coleman Airxcel A/C units. You can get the amperage draw for your A/C units by calling the manufacturer.

Hope this helps

I'll be ordering my 27DSRL this week and it will have a 15k air conditioner unit. I really don't want to have to run parallel two generators in order to have enough power, so I'm considering getting the Honda eu6500 or eu7000. I know it's a lot heavier and cost a lot more, but at least I won't have to worry about having enough power. Also it makes an excellent back up power for my home.

I'm still weighing all my options though and have a few weeks before my new TT arrives to think on it. Anyone else running the 7500/7000 on theirs and can provide some feed back? I know most have the 2000, 2000 in parallel, or 3000's so I'd love your opinions on the bigger units.

New to Jayco with a scant 5 weeks under my belt so I will give my Artic Fox exp.

I was set up to boondock with solar, 2 group 31 Odessey batts, Onan 2.5 kW propane genset and a Xantrec 2000 inverter.

One problem, my AC would not run off this set up. Due to space I could not put 2x genset in my unit. But I discovered a work around.

Use the batteries to start the AC then fire up the genset. Note I did not install this setup, it's OEM on my unit. Point is the starting amps vs the running amps are vastly different.

Do a quick search for the Champion 3100 inverter on this forum. Many discussions about it. We have one and the 15 AC. Reviews say it runs it well as long as not using micro at same time. Goes on sale regularly at Costco for $699. I can see the benefit of parallel Hondas and just taking one when AC not needed but the price difference was not worth it to us.

EasyStart 3T

Ok so I was doing some browsing on the web to find what's the best solution for powering a 15k ac unit. I found a guy who's actually powering it with just one Honda eu2000i using a MicroAir EasyStart 3T soft start device. And here I was contemplating getting a EU7000 series.

Here is his thread:

And here is a YouTube video giving a demonstration of the unit:

My Honda eu3000is runs my 15K a/c just fine. The a/c is louder than the generator.

Just before we got our trailer I went and purchased a generator. Thinking we might need it on the road, places without power, etc. I purchased a Champion 4500W start / 3650W run (model 100216) at tractor supply for just over $300. Weighs 99lb, has a 30A RV plug on it and is not very loud compared to others like it in size. I put wheels on one end and looked into some way to mount on the trailer or transport it in the back of my truck. Now that we've made a few trips (without the generator) I've realized I likely won't ever need it. My wife picks the camping spots and all have full hookup. The onboard battery and gas are enough to operate most of what we need (slide out, water, lights frig), other than the AC, while traveling but we don't need it then. Net, I doubt I will use the generator for the trailer and it will end up being used around my shop or out on our property. If I had made a few trips prior I doubt I would have purchased the generator. So far all of the sites we have visited wouldn't allow them anyway and I've yet to see anyone using one. That said, we are not in the areas with no hookups so wouldn't expect any.

Mostly I use my generator to power the air conditioner while we go into something. We have dog and don't like to leave her in the trailer without the a/c going in the summer. We frequently stop at things like Bass Pro, museums and even when shopping at Wally World. If we're going to be gone for any length of time I just fire up the generator and turn on the a/c. Also it's handy for lunch stops if you're somewhere like southern Arizona in the summer.

We use our TT more for long distance travelling and not so much for weekend camping like most folks.

I have it mounted on one of these:

According to Coleman...I asked why my 2.5kw genset would not start, but would run my 11k AC unit. Yes I tried several hard start devices. Their first question was how old was my AC. 8 years and blew ice cold.

The answer was as the nits get older due to compressor wear it requires more amps to start. Which is why my genset will run it, but not start it.

I just picked up a Champion 3100I last week based on the reviews on this site. Had to try it at home and it runs the 15000 A/C with no problems. I played with loads and it looks like watching power usage just like a 30Amp connection in a camp ground and all's good. It run's everything at once except A/C and microwave or two A/C's, pick one of the higher drawing units, two over loads the generator. It's quite, can't be heard over the A/C.
