2012 ford expedition EL - 2016 28 BHBE

I currently own a 06 23B but and picking up my new 2016 28BHBE next week. Looking for thoughts and advice on how my 2012 ford expedition EL will handle the camper or what i can do to the expedition? The owners manual says with a WD hitch (i use a Husky center line TS) i can tow up to 10K. I have added a K&N air filter and planning to have a magnaflow exhaust installed as well. Living in southern, VA there are always going to be mountains to pull going to any destination. I know a truck would be a better option but with 3 kids, Wife and dog in tow a truck does not have a third row.

If you could give more details such as approximate loaded weight of trailer and payload of your Expedition as well as engine, etc. that would be helpful. We had an '04 Expedition with 5.4 V8 and heavy duty tow package. Towed our 5500# loaded tt 2 times before upgrading to and Excursion. BIG difference. We have 4 kids, 2 dogs plus us (mom and dad.) Were maxed out on payload and had a lot of rear sagging even with a WDH. Our rating was slightly less than yours at 8950#.

Your KN Filter and Exhaust do not do anything to increase your towing capacity.


My personal opinion is that is a lot of trailer for an Expedition.


What is the loaded weight of your Expedition? What is the loaded Weight of the Trailer? What is the loaded Tounge Weight of the trailer? What is the capacity of your hitch? What are the axles rated for in your Expedition? What is the GCVWR for the expedition?


You can get most of the information off of the door sticker on your car and guesstimates from the published data on the trailer. Then a loaded trip to the CAT scale with fuel, kids, gear and stuff in the Expedition to get real weights. My guess is your going to be close to capacity on something.


You should also go back and close two of your posts since this was crossposted in three different forums or it will get confusing for the others trying to help you.

X2. Your door sticker will tell the full story on payload capacity, but what I found online is this "payload capacity on the EL is 1,580 pounds with two-wheel drive and 1,530 with four-wheel drive."

The GVWR of the trailer is 9250#, with a 2710# CC. Not likely you'd load 2710# of stuff in it, but it's not out of the bounds of reality that you'd have 1000# - 1500# of stuff. Let's say its 1500#. That would make your trailer weigh 8040#. This potentially gives you a 1045# tongue weight.

Subtract 1045 from the 1580# payload your Expy may have. That only leaves 535# for your kids, wife, dog, and any thing else you carry in the truck.

Towing capacity is only one part of the issue. Your payload capacity is a bigger issue. That would include the tongue weight of the trailer plus all cargo (people and fuel also) in your vehicle. It appears you will be over your weight limit. It may drag it down the road but is it safe is the question. As said, check for YOUR vehicle's cargo capacity, typically found on a yellow sticker on the drivers door rail. Than add fuel, cargo all the people and tongue weight of your trailer. Good Luck

Do a search for 2012 ford towing guide. Here's a screen shot from the guide regarding your vehicle. I would say you don't want to pull the 28BHBE with the Expedition.

I am in the same situation, 3 kids, wife (no dog) and sometimes mother in law goes along.
Too bad Ford didn't keep making the Excursion.
We loaded the trailer to how we usually load it for camping (going camping for a long weekend) , stopped by a local CAT scale. Charged $10.00 for the first weigh and $2.00 for each reweigh. Expedition is rated for 15000 pounds GCVWR. We weighed in at 14880. Trailer weight was 7350. Rear axel on the Expedition was at 4200 and GAWR is 4250 (We don't carry a lot of extra stuff, food, clothing...etc) We are very close to the Expedition limits.

As others have said, but the numbers, you'll be over.

Numbers aside, can your Ford pull this trailer? Sure. On a flat highway, in good conditions, you'll feel confident in your set up.

But throw in rain, wind, traffic, mountain passes (up & down), there will be enough scary situations you'll be forced to handle, immediately, that you'll be wishing for a bigger tow vehicle, or you're older smaller trailer.
