264BHW Bolts not tightened

While checking over my 2016 264BHW I was looking at the row of bolts along the perimeter of the underside of the trailer. You can only see the threads of the bolt, the lock washer and the nut. The lock washer was not fully compressed and it looks like the nut is only "snug" I put a wrench on one of them and tightened it at least a turn before it was completely tight. Has anyone else heard of or had this issue. Surely they are supposed to be completely tightened down?

thanks
Joe

I can't say what is correct but I found the same issue on our 2014 Jay flight. I was able to turn all the nuts one full turn to make them tight. If those are the only bolts holding the box to the frame then I would want them tight.

After using my 2011 26BH for a few years, I decided to check those nuts around the perimeter and found that all were loose to some extent, some more than others. I snugged them all up.

Maybe everything "settles" after towing and putting on miles. Hopefully you only have to do it once.

Same here, about 1 turn or so to re-tighten them all. I found one or two even much looser, as the nuts were backing off. As said above, the trailer is just settling after being built. Happens to lots of things. It is probably to the wood floor drying out a bit and shrinking. One of those good things to put on a yearly checklist!

Looks like I'll be checking those in the spring too... wonder if it would be worth an email to Jayco and ask them if this is normal to have to tighten them...

I found a few of those perimeter nuts loose on my TT too. I believe they are used to secure the bottom wall plate to the floor and frame.

My previous 2014 198RD had the same issue. I couldn't believe it - every single one of those nuts was significantly loose right from the get go. Had to go around the whole trailer and tighten each one. If I recall correctly I had to use a 1/2 inch deep socket to accommodate the bolt shaft length.

It could be just settling from the drive for delivery... I am sure your dealer would tighten them up to spec under warranty

Guess I better check my bolts before heading out this spring. Thanks for the heads up.

Happy RVing,

I've added the underbelly option. Will these bolts still be visible? Still waiting on delivery. Wireman

We are talking about the bolts holding the exterior walls to the outriggers. These are outside the frame of the trailer. the enclosed underbelly is contained between the frame. The bolts are easy to see and access.

I saw a video on You Tube where they showed how Jayco makes their travel trailers and 5th wheels. I wish I hadn't seen it 'cause the guy in it said that it takes 7 hours to make a trailer and you could see everyone rushing and running around to meet their quotas. It was a bash on Jayco so I'm not sure if anything was fabricated but it would explain why your bolts/screws weren't tightened. I'm just now ordering my Jayco and plan on going through it with a fine toothed comb before signing for it. I really like the model we picked out for the Murphy bed and the only other company making trailers with them was Rockwood and I did not like their quality compared to Jayco. Hey, every company has quotas, you just have to make sure your item is up to your own standards.

Just checked my bolts tonite. As Trunce said LOOSE.
Out of 16 bolts, 3 were easyily hand tightened and the rest all needed several turns to tighten up. Hope that was just 2 years of travel and not poor quality control by Jayco.
Happy RVing,
Jeff
