Anybody using SafetyStruts on 4"bumper?

Understanding the 100 lb. limitations of my 4" rear bumper, I want to mount a bike rack. Already has the spare mounted. Saw a product called SafetyStruts by Mount-n-lock for $48 on Amazon. Has anybody tried them and what do you think, will it really allow 400 lbs. as advertised? I don't want to lose my load while going down the highway. lol Thanks.
Happy RVing,
Jeff

Ummh...looks like it would help some. If you are planning on keeping your RV take it to a welding shop and have them weld a receiver to the frame. Or, something along that line.

The subject of them have come up a few time. Have not heard of anyone on the forum actual using them. Personally I would do some research, talk to a welding shop and ask their advice, before installing them. For about $300-$400 you can have a welding shop build and install a custom 2" receiver hitch.

Jagiven, I see you have a 23B did you have one welded to your frame? How do you like it if you did. I have a 23J and am concerned about the bouncing that goes on back there.

I have a 2014 32BHDS that I had a local welding shop add a reciever to the rear. As most will tell you, the added weight and bouncing will tear off your bumper. It cost me $375. Here are some pictures.

When we ordered our 32BHDS we spent the extra $150.00 and had the factory bike tray added to our order. Been up to Maine and down to Disney carrying 3 bikes and had no issues.

I wish I had made that purchase when I bought mine. They didn't have one on the lot. I wanted one after the purchase, but then they wanted $750+.

Seems to me that $50 for a couple of sturdy brackets that seem to do the trick would be a better bet than $300-$400 for a receiver hitch welded to the frame, but that's just me. Looking at the site, they have good reviews and a good return policy. I ordered a set.

Hey Cheesy- Glad you ordered a set. I'm not ready to spend $300 either, then add the hitch and bike rack. Let us know how it goes and what you think, with pics. Will you then mount a tray or bike rack? How much weight do you expect to carry on that bumper? Thanks.
Happy RVing,
Jeff

Hmmmm. I paid my dealer $60 to mount a bumper hitch to hold a bike rack. They said I could safely put two bicycles on a bike rack, but no more weight than that. My frame is accessible and hitch-ready, if I want to add one for a tray. But this discussion makes me wonder if I can safely attach two bikes and a bike rack back there. (My spare tire is mounted below the trailer.)

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I would not mount anything to the bumper. I had a bumper come off (broke welds) on I 95 many years ago. I drug one side of it until a passing car got my attention. I broke the other side off and put it in the truck. The bumper is thin metal and the frame is thicker metal. That leads to welds that don't burn through the thinner metal but they don't penetrate the thicker metal all that well. It's the nature of welding thin metal to thick metal. It would be stronger if it were bolted on IMHO.

I think brackets bolted on would be better than nothing. But welding something made from same thickness to the frame with good penetration welds would be best.

I had a friend weld some plates from the frame to the bumper to reinforce it. Worked out great and we towed with our bikes from Texas to Maine and back with zero problems.

I had them on my old TT. They worked great for me...hauled a Swagman 2-bike rack on the bumper.

I installed a pair of them on my back bumper but I still didn't feel comfortable hauling bikes back there . . . So I bought the Lippert Company's Jack-it bike rack that mounted on the front of our trailer (Jayco 18 SRB) where the jack is located. I feel very comfortable going down the road now. Google it or look it up and Amazon and check it out.

Have them installed on my 212QWB and haven't had an issue. A friend who is a welder has offered to build a new "bumper" out of heavier gauge metal. I'm considering this but in the future.

Got the same ones from Mount-N-Lock except I also got the 2 inch hitch. Put them on myself in about 45 minutes. Also put the hitch on and have a 2 bike rack. I carry 1 bike on it going to our summer place and the wife was behind me and watched it the whole 190 miles. She said that the bike rack was really steady and didm't move at all. I would recommend it. I got it from Mount-N-Lock, it cost about 100.00 including shipping, that was over a year ago.

I looked at them and decided that they still weren't heavy duty enough for my peace of mind, and I also saw some installs that resulted in the brackets not square to the bumper causing little to no support. I opted for custom welding reinforcement by a reputable shop which strengthened my bumper to the point that I could hang the trailer from it. I have no worries in the world now hauling bikes.

I bought some safety struts for my 145rb this spring along with the 1 1/4 hitch for my bike rack. I only had one bike on it this summer but did have it down a few dirt roads and bumper and bike are still on the back of the camper. I do feel comfortable with the struts supporting the bumper like they do, looks like they should do the job just fine. don't have a picture here that shows my setup with the rack and bike, you can barely make out the bike in this picture.

They absolutely work. I just wrote up my experience with them in the Hybrid section. I installed the safety struts on my Jayco X19H Hybrid. The struts bolt to the frame supporting the bumper. I carried a Honda eu3000is generator on a tray bolted to the bumper. With gas that generator weighed close to 200 pounds. Drove from southern Arizona all the way to Washington State and back (spent alot of time in Oregon as well. Ocean to the mountains). Never a problem. Due to the fact the safety struts bolt to the RV frame and fully support the bumper, it works great. Even the cheap welds on the 4in bumper stayed intact. Again, the struts are bolted to the frame not the bumper. Great great product. I bought the tray from Mount-N-Lock as well. I used ratchet style straps to hold the generator to the tray. Everything remained tight.
