Awning always wet?

We just bought a 2011 22FB and when we bought it the awning was soaking wet and moldy. I cleaned it quite well and let it dry in the sun.

Every time I open it the awning is soaking wet - seems like condensation - not rainwater.

On my old Terry Trailer, I don't recall the awning being so wet and am wondering if it was made of a different material that breathed better - ie: maybe Nylon vs Vinyl?

I may replace the awning material, and if I do, am looking for advice on materials that will not cause this ongoing issue.

Yeah, even if I roll mine up dry you can't be under it when you open it or you get a shower. I don't get it either..

I have noticed when it rains the rolled up awning tends to "wick" the rainwater up into the roll. Once in there it stays until unrolled. I keep mine under a carport but one end can still get rain water when the wind blows it there.

The symptoms are exactly as you describe.

It might have been Threebutchers that purchased a 4" or 5" plastic gutter section and turned it upside down over the awning to keep the rain off it. Notch the ends to go over the roller ends. Remember to take it off before you leave home.

Thanks Upuaut for this post. I thought I was crazy. Every time it rains we have to open the awning to dry. Never happened on the pup. I really don't think changing material will help. Ours is a carefree. My Grandkids are also carefree, especially when they are wet (beach, rain, even mudpuddles.)

My awning is always wet, even when the trailer is parked. It's always wet and I have to conciously dry it whenever possible to lessen the mildew/mold and smell associated with it. Once a month or so I take a garden sprayer and spray and scrub the awning with a light bleach mix. My manual awning on the last trailer never had this problem so I'm not sure what gives.

tnchuck100 hit the nail on the head.

Water wicks in through the roll ends via capillary action and that my friend is why your awning is always wet and stinky.

I wash my awning, let it dry and then tilt each end for 30 minutes before rolling it up and storing the camper in my shop. My awning is always nice and dry when I deploy it.

My 1997 Terry had a Dometic Awning and it was never like this. The 22FB is a Carefree.

Tunce had a suggestion in post #4 with the section of PVC rain gutter.

They also sell a cap that fits over the awning at Camper World, I believe, I looked into getting one. My friend had sent me a link for it.

My awning seems to stay wet too. I saw this yesterday and thought about trying it.

It's a cap made out of a 2 liter bottle. Looks like a cheap and easy solution.

I would probably fall off the ladder and kill myself. And it looked like a hassle getting it over the end. I would also worry about it cutting the awning. I will just live with the poor design..

Wet is not a problem since there are no natural materials involved. Mildew is a problem but all you have to do to prevent it is break the chain of things it needs to grow. It needs water and something organic and heat. You can't do anything about the water or the heat but the organic part is dirt on the awning.

This comes from here:

This is why I apply waterproofing to our awning at least 3 times each season !!

I made a pair for my awning this week - with clear bottles. :-) We have had a good shower and a drizzle this week. I'll check the awning this afternoon to see if it's dry.
