just turn the tube by hand after you put the lever in open position

it must be right there. Did you put the awning away? Did you let go off the strap before it was done retracting?

You may be able to release the awning and pull it down a little by hand ( with a ladder ) and get the strap may be a two person job.
Pull down the bars down on each side.
I take it is a manual awning?

On YouTube, Search for Rob White, he has a number of videos. 1.Howto open a Carefree RV Awning and 2. How to close a Carefree RV Awning. Even the expert had trouble closing the awning so don't beat yourself up too much.

The strap broke on our small summer trailer and we had to pull the awning down with the arms until we could reach what was left of the strap. We now have a new one from Camping World.

I always stand on the step and pull the awning down at first by hand. Have never actually used the pole to grab the strap. It just seems easier for me, but then I'm pretty tall.

I hated that pull strap method for opening/closing the 20' Carefree of Colorado awning on my TT. So when one of the springs broke inside the tube, I purchased a a kit Carefree sells that converts it to the "old fashioned" crank system like you see used with awnings on storefront windows. No springs to break, no strap to get "lost" inside the awning when you roll it up, or remove/attach every time you use the awning and no more annoying direction lever that never seemed want to change to the direction you wanted the awning to go without a fight. The smooth, easy-turning worm-drive crank mechanism will not permit the awning tube to rotate in either direction once you stop cranking. This allows you to tighten the awning fully against the side of your rig. It never moves. The strap method never tightened as well and I always had "play" in the rolled up awning that would cause the plastic arm clamps to "unto". I had to constantly check and relock them while in transit. With the crank system, this problem is GONE. The arm locks have never undone themselves since changing over.

This was probably one of the best mods I ever made to my TT.

Didn't know they had such an animal

My three BIL's all have electric awnings, I'm the hold-out with a standard manual which I prefer. Based on their comments when we camp they would prefer a manual......, I think because my sisters complain they can't hang 50lbs of arts and crafts from an electric

I converted to the kit that FPM has. Not because I broke a spring, but because I did like OP and let my strap go up into awning.. several times. As short as I am with a 16ft awning, I couldn't reach the lever to roll up and hold the strap in the center. Now cranking it in and out is much easier. I had the conversion done at the Good Sam Rally in ATL last fall, and it was worth every penny (around $200 installed). Dealer came to where I was parked and changed out.. I can now work my awning by myself!
