If a manual awning and its long (which has a higher risk of being bent from weather), some folks use an optional centre support pole.

If wondering, I use a centre support (both horizonal and vertical) rails at my seasonal site. I also used 2 x flappers on each side as well. Thus, elimination of noise and possible tearing. Some folks at my seasonal site use a large hurricane strap - that goes over the centre of the awning. If its going to be that windy, I pull my slide awning it. Keeping the awning on a steep slope helps as well.
Both Centre Support Poles and De-flappers can removed by hand. no special tools are required.
