Axle replacement

Last season I noticed unusual tire wear on one of my four tires. Went to a trailer shop and they diagnosed a bent axle. They said my trailer is actually under-axled which I tend to agree with (dual 3500lb and GVWR 7500lb). It's the biggest trailer before they stepped up to the 5200lb axles with the 6 bolt hubs.

They will replace the bent axle with another 3500lb but that's setting me up for the same scenario in the future.

What they are suggesting is upgrading to twin 3500lb HD axles which is the beam from a 5200lb axle utilizing 3500lb spindles so I can keep my current wheels.

Anyone have any comments about this plan? Ever heard of these HD axles before?

It's a brand new axle unit with new bearings, brakes, everything.

It would save a bunch of cash buying wheels and tires. Being your TT is a '13, do you need new tires anyway? If so maybe upgrading to the 5200# axles is worth it.

Side note: Our 2017 28BHBE has a GVW of 9250# but came with 4400# axles and 6 lug wheels and load range D tires aired to 65 psi. The axles are sized knowing 10-15% of the trailer weight will be on the tongue.

Are you suggesting upgrading to true 5200lb axles with 6 bolt hubs and buying new wheels?

It doesn't feel right that manufacturers are pushing tire and axle ratings to the max like this. I have read plenty of other stories like mine.

I do need new tires and will be upgrading to LR D tires.

What is the cost difference? Tires are not counted as you are upgrading anyway. I would go 5200# axles with keeping the stock leaf springs if there isn't much of a difference.

I'll have to call and see how much the 5200lb axles are over the 3500lbHD but at the very least it would require new rims which would be very expensive
