Battery Box Full of Water

The battery box housing my trailer battery lets rain in from the top vent holes. I've had several inches accumulate over time. My question, should I drill a vent hole at the bottom. Some have said that this is not a good idea cause if the battery leaks acid, then the leakage will spill onto the trailer support frame and cause damage. Should I drill (Yes/No)?

Drill holes. When me dealer installed my battery, they screwed the box to the framing, and drilled several weep holes. Never have had any issues.

I've had lots of batteries in lots of different vehicles/RVs over many decades and have never had a battery leak or heard of anyone that had that happen.

Perhaps buy a better box? There are a slew of various styles and designs out there! We're also in the process of purchasing locks for our battery and propane tanks 'cuz you can't control what happens while they're in storage.

I cut a small piece of plexiglass and bolted it to the top of the battery box above the vent, using brass bolts and 1" spacers. There still is enough ventilation, but the rain doesn't go in the holes any more. Next I re-drilled the holes in the bottom of the box and made them bigger, plus added a few more. This year when I winterized and removed the battery the box was bone dry, and it was raining the day I did it.

I bought a Torklift battery box to replace the plastic one. It holds two batteries and is made of aluminum with a SLIDE LID and a lock.

It has holes drilled in the bottom of it I have had it over a year now and no water build up inside.

I would recommend this box to anyone wanting a little more security for their batteries.
