Bike rack on rear bumper

Hello everyone,

We have a 2010 19H.

Would like to add a Thule 2 bike carrier to the rear bumper, but the bumper is not very robust!

This carrier has a standard 2 inch receiver.

Has anyone beefed up the bumper, or added a receiver to the frame?

Thanks,

Btm

Btm,

Welcome to JOF.

This has been discussed here before, not too long ago in-fact. I've transported bike on the rear of my RVs before, but didn't like it. On my last trailer(5er) I installed one, but removed it after a couple trips. I didn't like the fact of it being mounter to the poorly welded bumper.
If I had to do it again, I'd have to go with this hitch.

Enjoy the forums,

I had a hitch welded to the rear of my Jayco as I also didn't like the idea of the weak bumper carrying any weight. The shop added two crossbeams perpendicular to the frame rails and then added the receiver tube. The entire thing is gusseted and the welds are excellent. I use mine to tow a pwc, but would not hesitate to throw a bike rack or just a standard cargo rack on if needed.

We had the same problem. Solution was to have receiver installed on front of truck. Rack is a swagman. Works great with no worries of anything happening to the bikes or the TT.

I would only have a new receiver welded to your existing trailer frame. Don't use the bumper to mount anything.

We have a 2” hitch welded to the frame members on ours. It works great!

The square tube bumper is only tack welded on and is made of very light material. Do NOT install a bike rack to it, or you will be replacing your bumper, due to broken welds or due to twisted metal.

A good welding shop can set you up nicely.

Agreed. The square tube "bumper" is only useful to store your sewer hose. And as for protection, well, it probably will protect against bicycles denting your trailer's rear wall, but not a whole lot more.

Enjoy the forums,
=====================

I have a hitch mounted on our Eagle 322FKS trailer very much like the one you mention except the female bracket is on top of the plate. We've hauled out two bikes to Florida twice and all over the place. Never had any problems. Others have mentioned problems but I figured that bumper holds my full size spare very easily.

Check the bumper welds often and good luck!

The 19h (well at least mine), had a crappy light 'c' channel bumper.

I added a hitch to the back of mine.

I put on a 2" receiver, and then had to weld a piece of square tubing right at the 'c' channel bumper, to have somewhere to weld the 2" receiver to. It was necessary to put at least one other cross member in, as it had so much bounce. If memory serves, I had to put a couple of triangle gussets in to stiffen it all up as well.

I was never really successful in getting it "just right", but i found out I could take some of the bounce out by using a ratchet strap to tighten it up.

I did it, we were ok, but I can't say I was ever 100% confident, 100% of the time.

Before my very ugly falling out with them, I used to work in a RV dealer parts department. We had a very irate customer who came in one day. He had purchased a bike rack that clamped to the square tube rear bumper of the new camper he had recently purchased from us. He was taking a trip and stopped at a rest area. He found that all three of their bikes were missing, the bike rack was less vertical and more sticking straight back to the rear and the rear square tube bumper was twisted like a corkscrew. He was talking to the manager and was pushing for repairs to his camper as well as replacement of the bikes.

To make this story shorter, the rear bumper was fixed under the camper warranty and he was cautioned that since the tube wall thickness was so thin, doing it again wasn't advisable. Soon afterwards the RV manufacturer (Starcraft) sent out a service dept. notice advising that warranty claims would not be honored for rear tube bumpers where any non-factory items were mounted on the tube bumper.

So unless the tube bumper is made of some pretty beefy material, don't do it.

Bike racks with hitch are available. I picked up a used one that fits 4 bikes, mounts in the 2" receiver on the TV and can pull up 3500 lb., max tongue weight 350 lb., the brand is Buyers. Hope this is helpful.
