Bike Rack on Tongue - weight?

Hi, I put a Jack-It bike rack on the tongue of my SLX, 212 QBW and carry two bikes. Does this change the weight on the tongue that I need to adjust the camper receiver higher? It is approximately 100 lbs. weight increase.

Thank you

Measure it and see how much it squats with and without the bikes. Without knowing more about your tow rig and the actual weights it's really hard to advise.

Given that most shank adjustments are 1" apart and I would doubt that you get an additional 1" of squat with only 100lbs, so probably not.... but again that would have a lot to do with what your tow vehicle is and how much the total tongue weight is

Measure the drop before putting the bikes on and then after. It really doesn't matter where but I'd use the hitch receiver as my reference point. If adding the bikes causes it to lower by more than 1" then raise the ball accordingly. If not, and you feel it tows comfortably, then leave it alone.

If it tows fine now, and you don't plan on taking the bikes with you every time you go, i'd not adjust it at all.

A small amount of weight in the back of the trailer could easily offset the effect of the bikes on the tounge.

You may not need to adjust the actual hitch, depending on hitch type. With my round bar I just take up one more link in the chain when towing heavy to adjust more weight forward and aft. Adjusting the head height will adjust the attitude of the trailer which you don't want. Adjusting the pitch angle of the head will usually change the take up.

Yours looks like a trunnion bar from the picture, maybe an Equal-i-zer? Is it possible to just adjust the trunnion ends up one notch to transfer more weight, or does it have an angle adjustment at the head end? The manual for the hitch will probably tell you how to do this.

How close are you to your weight capacity of your truck? Will the added tongue weight put you over?

I am about to install the exact rack on our Jay Feather. I am going to take my rig to the CAT Scale once I have everything loaded for camping. I will weigh the TV by itself with DW and me, full tank of gas, and bed loaded. Then I will weigh the TV with the TT and WDH engaged. Then I will weigh the TV and TT with the WDH disengaged. This is the best way to determine if you are within your TV and TT weight capacities. I know that I will likely be moving my WDH brackets up a notch to distribute more weight to the front axle of TV. On my last weighing, the front axle needed about 200lbs shifted to it.

The CAT weights of each axle is really the best way to know what you need to do with your WDH.

How do you like the bike rack? We have the same camper. And have been looking for a bike rack.
