Black Tank Flush

My Jayco 22FB has a hose connection for flushing the black tank. A sticker states that the black tank valve has to be open when the water is turned on. However, I was just watching some YouTube videos and one stated that you can shut the black take valve with the water on for a few minutes (3-4) and open the valve again. They did this a couple of times until the tank ran clear by watching the clear elbow. This video was on a motor home and not a Jayco trailer. Could I follow this procedure on my 22FB or is it possible the motor home is set-up differently.

You can close it for a bit. They say leave it open because you can imagine the mess if you close it and forget about it.

What you saw in the video is exactly the method I follow. I rarely use the black tank flush during the camping season except on our last trip of the year, usually I have to follow that method about 6 times before the water runs clear.

I normally only have about 50% level on the black tank. I leave the black dump valve closed and run the tank flusher for about 2 minutes to get everything stirred up then open the dump valve. When it is almost empty I close the valve again for about 2 minutes and open again. If no one is waiting behind me I will repeat this about 3 - 4 times.

I do this as well, closing the valve and letting the water rise in the tank a few times. However, I know a guy who incorrectly hooked his hose to the black tank flush at a campground when setting up. He thought he was all set to camp when people started yelling that he had a geyser coming out of the vent on the roof. So while I do close my black valve to flush the tank out, I always make sure I check my gauge and never leave the process unattended!

Question about the flush connection

So is the flush connection an option? I have a 2012 22FB and can't find a connection and the dealer never said anything about one. I bought and used a flush wand but I assume the connection would do a better job of cleaning.

My 22fb is a 2013. The connection is on the rear to the right of center.

If you have it, you can't miss it. Mine (28BHBE) is on the rear wall next to the city water inlet. It has a big silver sticker above it that warns you to leave the valves open while operating the flush.

I actually flushed what I thought was a "clean" black tank into my side yard after one of our first trips (gasp! Yeah, yeah, I know...). Needless to say, it was NOT clean, so yes, the built-in flush works well. And no, I will NOT do that again...

I would be carefull leaving the black tank valve closed while operating the tank flush. You could also damage a check valve for the flush system. If it is damaged you will get water in your bathroom. This was a common problem on allot of Keystone campers and it is a similar set up on the Jaycos. It happened to my buddy on his new Keystone Hornet he read people were leaving them closed for allittle while so he tried it. Next time he went camping water all over the bathroom floor.

I purchased one to install but haven't installed it yet. Quickie flush purchased from amazon for a bit over 20 bucks. Probably throw it in this spring before our season get under way.

When you install it, route the inlet and mount it near your valves. That way you dont have to drag a hose around the other side of the camper.

+1 It's not cool having some utilities off the back of the coach and others off the side...

My connection for the black tank flush is right above the fresh water fill hole. What a stupid place to put it.

I understand people have there own way of doing things. But your going to tell me not one person here has had an issue with closing there black tank valve and operating the tank flush. It is not recommended to do in the owners manual and damage can happen. I would like to hear from some of you who had problems doing this. As I said earlier there is a check valve that can be damaged so becarefull. Just dont want to see what happened to my buddy happen to anyone else. Best of luck to everyone who does this. On my last trailer it did not have a tank flush so I added the Tornado tank flush. They also did not recommend leaving the valve closed while operating it.

I've never tried it with the valves closed, I'm anxiously awaiting more feedback from those who have before I try it...

After reading Donedroolin's posts I looked in my manual (2013 Jay Flight) and there was actually no mention made at all regarding the black tank flush. I believe that 2013 was the first year Jayco offered the flush valve on the Jay Flight, so I also looked in the 2014 manual, and there's no mention of it there either. So I just called Jayco and asked. The lady was very nice on the phone and her exact words to me were, "You could close the valve but we don't recommend it simply because if you leave it unattended, the tank will overflow." So I asked if there was any other reason not to close it, such as a check valve and she said, "No, the only reason we can't recommend it is because of the potential for overflow."

I installed the QF on my '12 26BH. I often run it with the valve closed, however I never walk away. If I had to walk away for a minute, I would open the valves just in case.

I think your right about it not saying it in the owners manual. I believe I read it in the instuctions from the manufaturer of the black tank flush. When I get home I will look and try to find it.

This is kind of where I was at with this. They're trying to cover themselves in the event that someone leaves it unattended and ends up with a HUGE mess in the commode area. It seems like the check valve wouldn't be an issue (unless you got to overflow) because the flow would be one way. Water into the tank, air out the vent (again, unless you overfill and get to the top of the tank). It seems to me that if you are careful and don't leave it unattended and don't overfill, you should be fine.

If you think about it, is there really any difference whether the water is entering the tank from the tank flush or from the toilet? When it's full, it's full and will overflow. Before that, you should be okay. Right?
