Black Water Winterization

So after getting our first TT last weekend I plan on winterizing the lines this weekend. The dealer drained all the lines and tanks. However the black water sensor is showing 2/3's full even though I seen it emptied at the dealership as they wanted to make sure. Cut a long story short he said there might be some "stuff" on the sensor and that I should throw in a bucket of water and a cascade tablet.

Anyone heard of this? or is there something better? Also is there anything else needed to be done to the black water tank apart from draining it for winter?

Cheers.

Jim

The 1/3, 2/3, FULL idiot lights for the black water tank are notoriously inaccurate. If the dealer has winterized your system you will be fine.

Want a better tank level indication system? Here is what I installed:

When I winterize my TT, I always dump a "little" of the pink stuff into my tanks so that any remaining water doesn't freeze and damage the drain valves/seals.

The sensors, especially the blank tank sensor, can be useless at times. A couple buckets of water with detergent is fine in the tanks (not during winter storage), but best effective during the camping season and while in tow (sloshing around).

Sometimes during the camping season I will fill my black tank up with water/detergent and let it soak overnight, then empty the tank when I arrived at the CG the next day (seems to minimize the problems with my sensor).

Keep in mind that if your WDH is adjusted for towing with the tanks empty, a tank full of fluids may effect the TV's handling characteristics and the TT's tongue weight.

As stated above, the factory black tank sensors are basically worthless. Am planning next spring to install a set of Horst Miracle Probes in each of my three tanks. Have heard good things about them, and the fact that their black probes are long enough to protrude into the tank past any toilet paper build up, and they have a shield over the top to make sure nothing gets hung up on the probe itself.

Thanks for the info guys, looks like I am good to go until the spring and fill it with soapy water then.

Bob, do you throw some antifreeze in all 3 tanks? or just the grey and black?

tnchuck,
The SeeLeveL stuff looks pretty nice. A bit $$$ but looks like it WORKS. Does it loose any calibration or configuration when the power is off?

No. Calibration is never lost because of no power.

I built a wand to clean the black water tank. Walmart sells them. I used a 30 inch piece of 1/2 inch copper pipe. Ball valve on one end and hose fitting. The other end I installed a copper cap. I then drilled two 1/4 inch dia. holes about 1/2 inch apart in the side of the cap so the water comes out sideways. Cleans the black tank better than the Walmart wand because it has more pressure.
