Buying a New Skylark - Questions

My wife and I are looking at the Skylark FKV and like just about eveything about it. We have a couple of concerns that I thought I would post for feedback.

1) Our local dealer is considerably more expensive than we can get if we drive up north. We woud love to give the local dealer our business but they are priced out of our reach. My concern is if we purchase from another dealer will the local dealer service the unit? If not it could be a real issue if we have any issues.

2) We have a Hyndaui Santa Fe with a 3500# towing capacity. I know this is pushing it, but if we are thinking that we can make this work for the next few years until we upgrade ti a larger vehicle.

Any thoughts you have would be greatly appriciated!

Welcome to the Jayco Owners Forum TCloud! A local dealer may play that "you have to buy it here if you want to use our service department" ploy to get your business. Contact Jayco direct to inform them of the dealer's comment if they do. If you haven't commited to a contract yet, check out HOw To Purchase a New Jayco. It may help you to get your local dealer to go down on the price

I hope you are not planning on towing very far with the Santa Fe... It may feel ok while towing... but IF you ever have to do an emergency maneuver you may pay the price...sorry I dont want to be a wet blanket but I also dont want to read about another RVing family going to the campground in the sky...

Our plan is to upgrade the Santa Fe to a larger vehicle before we take any long trips. But for now we would use it just to take it to the local state parks.

Generally speaking, you should get minimum 25-30% of MSRP for a current yr model, and up to 35% off last years model depending on how far into the new year you are. But since this is a new model you should still easily get 25% off . Watch for any fees the dealer adds on, unless its related to title/tax, I usually just disgard any others when I factor what my offer should be.

Was in same condition as you are a year ago. Contacted RV Direct in Albany, NY. They quoted me a price with pickup being at their location. I then contacted my local Jayco dealer and he nearly matched the price, within 1000 dollars. But did not have to drive to pick it up, and had some modifications done. I ended up paying at that time 30% less than listed price. Get a price and approach your dealer, I am sure he wants to sell a unit.
Now for the second part of your problem. I towed my FKV with a Toyota 4-runner, V6 with a towing capacity of 5000 lbs. It did a good job handling the trailer except for hills. Then it would bog down, downshifting etc. Think you will find the Santa Fe a little light for that trailer even though it would be within spec.
Now for a general comment on the Skylark. Am very pleased with the trailer, have had no major issues and am looking forward to March when I will be pulling it out of storage and heading out.

Your vehicle may be able to handle pulling, but stopping is a concern. The extra weight may be hard on your braking system. Great choice of utilizing your local state parks until the upgrade. They will also give you a chance to get the hang of the new trailer while your close to home.
