Good for you and Mrs. Bono! Hey, the question should be, is she ready to camp with a four month old!

We drove past Des Moines to Davenport for our Jayco, a thousand miles from home. In our case we incorporated the pickup of our Eagle with a trip to Maryland, so the mileage was not a factor. We not only saved thousands on the purchase price but $1800 in delivery charges, if I remember correctly, had we purchased locally.

However, I'd be hard pressed to do it again. We had only two minor warranty problems and no dealer would do the work during the busy season and only one within a hundred miles that would do it in Oct./Nov. Had our trailer had the problems that some have we could have lost a season of use.

cekkk, this is an excellent point. Hopefully, DW will be ready for camping. It will be a $30k+ upgrade from camping under the tent, so I really hope it will work

Also, driving to Des Moines (RV Direct) will save me $2.5-3k (after all travel costs). This is 1,800 miles from West Coast one way. Based on your experience, is it worth to drive that far?
We took our baby out the first time at 7 wks. It's not the camping that's the problem, it's the drive. I would say 1800 miles in the car with an infant would be pretty tough. I actually did it with my niece when she was 2 weeks old (just in a car, no camper), it wasn't so bad because they sleep A LOT at that age, and the car is as good a place to sleep as any. We had 2 drivers and we were moving with a mission, so the miles went quick.

The advantage of towing your RV is that you have basically all the comforts of home right with you, so you're not stuck doing feedings or diapers in the back seat on the side of the road. At least for us, the big disadvantage (my son is just over 1 YO now) is that he started getting really active around that 4-month mark. Now, even though he is a GREAT car rider, our limit between "get out and move around" stops is about 2 hours in most cases. It's okay because we have several reasons to stop around those intervals (nature breaks, dog breaks, fuel stop, mom & dad meal breaks) so it works out. But stopping for 15-45 minutes every 2-3 hrs on an 1800 mile journey would be tough I think.

We plan to combat this by cramming as many hours of driving into his sleeping time as possible. That involves driving at very odd times, like leaving the house at 3:00 am. Or putting him to bed in his car seat at 7:00 pm and driving until 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning...

Oh, no, I would not take the family with me to pick up the trailer. This trip would be like 4 weeks journey.

The first campground I would like to visit is 1-1.5 hrs away, full hook ups, etc. It would be only me and possibly second driver.

Ah ha! I see! Well, in that case, I say why even wait until they're 4 months? No real reason to wait that long unless mommy's not well. I told my wife it was completely up to her, we'd go whenever she was ready. Well, that happened pretty quick IMO. Taking along the baby has never been a big deal for us. We decided early on that we were bound and determined not to become home-bound because of our baby, and we structured all our "baby" stuff around ultimate portability. He goes, and has always gone, wherever we go. And now it's getting even easier because he pretty much eats whatever we eat too! Downside (sort of) is that now he has to move around a lot more and requires a lot more interaction, so longer trips are out for now. Like I said, he travels great, but he has his limits. But we're practicing every chance we get!

Really, he's one of the main reasons we bought our trailer, so I'm going to get him out every chance I get. He's already taken a liking to it. We have certain toys that only come out while we're in the trailer, and he gets really happy and excited when he gets to play with them. I don't know if it's that or if he's feeding off our positive energy or what, but it warms my heart to no end knowing how much he loves camping already!

Camper_bob, thanks. I think it makes sense for me to wait for model 2017. I assume I could get the trailer in August / beginning of September. In CA you need to plan your camping trips months ahead, in particular with a longer trailer (>24 ft). Therefore, I will start making reservations for September, i.e. when the second baby will be four months old.

The way I look at it, is that if one were fortunate enough, were experienced enough, or were thoughtful enough and bought an RV that was a good fit, that one can and will use for many years, such that depreciation is irrelevant, and one is not having to rebuy within a couple years to makeup for the mismatch, that one is not suffering problems one was unprepared for because one is basically in the know, that based on quite a bit of knowledge one simply paid reasonable price for it, then you have made a good deal.

This, of course, is not a common way to look at it...maybe even a screwy way to look at it...because it takes about 7 years to decided if it was a good deal or not.

I also feel that it is almost impossible to call something a good deal if one had to get a loan to buy it, bought it new, or bought it used without doing a through inspection and paid for others to inspect what one can not.

This, of course, is also not a common way to look at it...maybe even a screwy way to look at it.

In fact, most of the time when reading good deal threads, I feel kind of skeptical...so, yes, I'm terrible and unrecoverable, just unbearable!

However, I did get written notice I'm now a Certified RV Service Technician with an Electrical Specialist...something to do when I feel like it now that I'm retired. So something in my favor.

bono,

If I could make one suggestion - compare the 26BH to the 264BHW before you buy. When we were looking, we considered the SLX 264BHW, but the storage difference and some of the other features (at least on the one we looked at) didn't make the savings worth it. We also have 2 small kids (3 and 5) and I can tell you that storage becomes a premium when you have kids! The difference in cabinet space over the couch and master bed is quite a bit.

Our thinking was to not cut corners to save $1500 for something we would be keeping for a lot of years to come - I'm glad we didn't! On the other hand, we decided against the next step up with a slide... Friends of ours "under bought" and now they will lose a bunch of money on their 2 year old unit to move up to something that better fits their kids... Just my 2 cents...

I compared the 264bhw and 26bh and can't quite justify the 40-50% increase in cost as my first TT. We had originally planned on a popup. Haha.

With probably holding off until the new year to purchase, is there a main RV show where companies show off their new models? I'd hate to buy a trailer only to have a new model a month or two later with some great new features. I wouldn't want to wait any later than April to buy though unless something amazing was in the works.

When we were looking, at Keystone RV, it was $12,900 for 264BHW vs. $14,500 for 26BH...

I am planing on 28DSBH. I am also big fan of traveling light. Of course, this is possible to only some extant with kids, but there is certain policy about that at my house and I will execute the policy
