Question Camping World - WDS Setup Cost

I'll be headed up to Camping World this Friday to pick up my new camper!! I am really pumped!!

Anyway, during negotiation of the camper the dealership wanted to charge me $800.00 for the entire setup of the towing system. I asked them to clarify what was included for the $800.00. The dealer told me that I would receive a trailer brake controller and a weight distribution system with all necessary setup and installation. Well, I already had a TBC on my F150 and I had planned to get my own WDS on Amazon based on the suggestions I received from the great people on this forum. My WDS showed up today and I plan to bring it with me to the dealership to setup the camper on Friday. I'm pretty handy and have all the tools needed to setup the WDS except I will need to drill holes in the trailer for the sway controller. How much do you think that the dealer will charge me to assist with this? I just want to know what I'll be looking at. I asked my sales rep this question today and he said I would have to ask the mechanics the day of. Anyway, has anyone ever had an experience like this?

If I were the sales guy I would want you to leave feeling happy and get the service dept. to do it at no cost to you in appreciation for buying from them.
It's called Customer Service...Good Pr.

We bought our camper at CW Indy and they didn't charge anything for hitch set up. You spent enough on the trailer, the hitch set up should be incidental, IMHO.

When I had my dealer add a left-side sway bar to my trailer, they charged for 1/2 hour of labor ($60 I think). Since I had no heavy-duty drill or thread taps, it seemed reasonable to me.

We bought ours at CW in Utah and they threw in an equalizer hitch including install to thank us for purchasing the trailer from them. I didn't even ask for that since we already had one. So I sold the old and kept the new one. I'm sure they hid that cost somewhere but still felt good to get that.

Most dealers in my area usually deeply discount hitches if not thrown in and free install and setup with tt purchase.

Dad taught me, "No free lunch"! If hitch etc is thrown in, its buried in the buy somewhere. If you already have or want to get the WDH somewhere else, ask them how much they will knock off the price. $800 sounds excessive although I remember I paid $500 with my first TT back in 06 but I needed everything on my F150 at the time and had no knowledge concerning a HD hitch system. With my last purchase in 2014 I said I already had a set up. Think they were a little miffed that the hitch had to be adjusted to handle the height of the new WH but only charged me $50 labor.

In October I purchased our 2015 Eagle from CW in Kingston NY. I wanted a Blue Ox Sway Pro hitch and the dealer didn't sell them. I purchased the Blue Ox from Etrailer and took it with me for the PDI. I'm very handy and wouldn't have any issue setting it up. After the PDI the tech helped me install the Blue Ox and setup at N/C. When all was done, the tech was great from start to finish so I gave the tech a $50 bill.

Hard to control any transaction when the seller knows you are "really pumped". This is why you are being taken advantage of. That $800.00 is way too much money they are quoting you. If it were me, I would call the salesman and tell him to cancel the order. Be willing to walk away from this if you can. Way too many dealers and RV's out there that you could be happy with. This is an early sign of things to come when you need service from these people. I think after your call to the sales rep. to cancel he will be a little more motivated to get off his behind and do his job by negotiating with that service department on your behalf. I wouldn't arrive back to that dealership to pick up anything until all the details and costs were spelled out before you got there. Take control.

My dealer is going set my hitch on my new truck for free because I bought the camper 3 years ago from them. My friend bought the same camper on Craig's list and they charged him $35 for his.

Best price I could find on an Equalizer hitch plus ball was about $525. I made a deal with CW to sell and install for $700. Worth it to me, even if it only takes them an hour.

CW has a per hour labor charge of $120. I think that is insane.

I too bought my hitch prior to PDI. I showed up and asked them to install. Recall they charged $100 or so. After about a year I wound up tweaking it a little. Also discovered several bolts needed tightening after a few trips. This was for the X23B.

That's low - around here the Hourly is 175-200/hour at most RV shops, if your not doing mechanical work on a Motorcoach it's high dollar - mechanical rates run right at 105-120/hour.

We were just looking at a new TT this past weekend. The salesman stated that if we did purchase, he would ensure that they transferred my hitch to the new unit at no cost to me. The cost would probably be hidden in there somewhere, but he pointed out that they would do it and not charge me.

Throwing an hour's billable time in the deal for no cost doesn't impact the salesman's commission, it's just good business. The tech gets paid if he's billable or not and if you don't interrupt billable work it doesn't cost the dealership anything extra. When trading in my X23B I gave the dealership the hitch (upgrading to a 5th) and my brake control. Sales guy said that they could use "free hitch or brake control" to sweeten the deal for the next buyer. I got what was, to me, a good price and the dealership was easy to work with so I let that stuff go.

Well, I got the 23MB today! I brought in all my WDS equipment and they set it all up and didn't charge a thing. My suggestion to those that are buying is to tell them you will purchase the WDS on your own and bring it in for them to install as part of the purchase. Just my 10 cents. Hopefully this helps others.
