Carefree auto awning

I have a 24T with the Carefree automatic awning. It has worked great the last several months until this weekend. Apparently when I retracted it last time the fuse blew. I found the blown fuse and replaced it. The awning then went out 18" or so then the fuse failed again. We took off the cover and checked the gears, housing, and motor and found nothing unusual. Changed the fuse again and it worked just fine. I closed the awning because of chance of storm that night. The next morning, I tried to open the awning and it had blow fuse again (after being retracted). I checked for shorts and found none.

Could it be a bad switch? Or a bad limiter on the motor?

Thanks.

My only thought is to try it with the "jumper cables" it came with. My dealer told me that if something happens, you may be able to troubleshoot it with those cables powering the awning.

You may want to check your owners manual first, mine said to unplug the switch before using the jumpers... guessing your is probably the same. Please let us know how this turns out in case it occurs to someone else! Good luck and happy camping!

Thanks for reply. I actually have been wondering if I have a bad switch?

Put some silicon spray on the rails that the awning slides up and down on.. that might help... In my case the awning would not retract.. found a shattered gear inside... Carefree was 0 help when I called them... Jayco fixed it as a goodwill gesture. IMHO Carefree makes CRAP...next time I have a probelm with that awning I will remove it and install a dometic manual one.

Carefree provides jumper cables? Geeze, another notch against my dealer - I didn't get any with my unit! I agree with Seann45 - I'd think hard about spending any money on another electric awning.

We have had trouble with this Carefree awning since the day we brought the camper from the dealer. Worked at the dealer once. It would stop and start all the way out and back till eventually it would only go one inch at a time. Then of course it stopped going at all. We checked the fuses, switch, continuity, opened up the gear box, and tried to bypass with cables. Nothing worked. This unit is new. We eventually limped it back in one inch at a time. We do not have a number for Carefree but have left an email message. If anyone has this I would appreciate it. The service people at Affinity RV in Prescott were wonderful trying to help us on the phone, ON A SATURDAY! This isn't stopping us from camping, just won't use this stupid awning. Unfortunate since we live in AZ. Can't wait to take it down and get all the warranty stuff fixed. Any ideas?

Carefree will tell you anything on the phone but when the dealer calls they will have forgotten about it.. IMHO carefree S U C K S... to them customers are a "dang" pain.

I don't know if this helps, but we learned with a squeeling brake problem that going through the dealer first and having the issue recorded in the system helped when we ultimately had a local shop fix it (we live too far from dealer to make the 4th trip down for yet another fix). For that we had to call Dexter ourselves (brake company whose assembly we have on the Jayco) to make the arrangements under warranty. Once I told them that dealer was working with them, they found our issues in the 'system' and helped out immediately (actually felt bad for us and sent the brake guy to our house for the St. Jude fix!).

Anyhow, our experience is to get any issue written into the Jayco system to make it easier to deal with the other companies when you have to

Our awning had a hic-cup when it was newer. We made sure that the dealer recorded it. Hope this helps some

My Jayco JayFlight G2 23FB has a power awning. Haven't had any trouble with it yet, I bought the trailer used it's an 08, I don't remember seeing any jumper cables, can someone post a picture of what they look like and where and how they attach just in case I have trouble getting it to retract in the future,

They look like VERY lightweight jumper cables. They attach to 2 terminals on the end of the awning, where the motor is located. They have clips on the other end for attachment to an external battery.

The instructions say that any voltage battery will work from 9-18v. If you look on the Carefree site, you will find complete instructions and maybe a way to order the cable.

On a used rig, it was likely long lost. I hope you never need it.

Were you able to get this issue resolved yet? Just to let you know, I had a very similar problem with mine, would go out about a foot or so and pop the fuse. I located a short in my wiring where the awning head (motor bracket assembly) mounts to the awning arm. It appeared that when the head was mounted to the arm, the wiring got pinched between the two assemblies and after ten months or so, finally wore through. I was able to repair the bad section and reroute the wires to an open path. No more fuse problem.
Hope this helps someone-
Happy camping!

I recently purchased a 2010 Octane ZX and guess what? No jumper cable either. I was out to the local camping world and found a toy hauler with a care free awning. In a drawer I found the jumper cables. They are made of regular lamp cord with alligator clips (red/blk) on one end and exposed wire on the other end. I plan on making my own set and making them long enough to reach ground level. I’m also going to go through the procedure to get familiar just in case. Hope this helps!
