Carrying a 5 gallons gas can

Okay guys I didn't know where to put this but we are planning on the long trip to Las Vegas this September and I would like to carry at least a 5 gals gas can but want to be safe doing so.

I will be carrying it in the back of my enclose pickup, so is it a good ideal to do, thank you for your reply?

You will be fine as long as you secure it and use a vented can so the temperature changes don't crush it. A safety-can is the best bet and is DOT approved.

People do it all the time in the winter. Go to the gas station with several five gallon approved containers.

Most every house has an emergency generator. Many are going to propane fired ones but for years we used the old yank on it gasoline genny..

Might consider using 2.5gal cans, easier to lift, move, use, possibly pack as well. I've used this brand in a small boat before with a outboard that had a 20oz internal gas tank to refill as needed on the water. Worked great, no spills or leaks.

Keep in mind that it's probably going to stink up the cargo area of your pickup. Watch out for food and clothes.

I was told that you can store you cans there, but best thing to do if your canopy has windows is to crack them open for air circulation. Please correct if I am wrong.

What is the point of carrying a gas can ? Is this for fuel for your vehicle? I'm been in some pretty remote parts of the west and have never been more than about 30 - 40 miles from a gas station. I make it a point to never go below 1/4 tank and have never felt the need to carry fuel....Id rather fill up when half empty than carry fuel with me. JMHO
Have a great Trip...

I have carried a 2.5 gallon gas can in the back of my truck with no issues. I aced it in an old milk crate, then secured the crate.

Worked great. I do not recall any gas odors. I used an old school plastic gas can. I hate the new CA approved gas as I always spill as I pour out of them.

I will never forget the night over 50 years ago that I had to wake a farmer from his sleep. It was about midnight and my 348 powered 1958 Impala ran out of gas in almost the middle of nowhere. After dumping about 5 gallons of gas into my tank the farmer said " Boy it don't cost any more to keep the top half full as it does the bottom."I have followed this saying since then.

I carried a 5 gallon can for our first season but it now stays at home.

We quickly discovered that our bladder's (DW's, mine and the dog's) usually don't go more than 2 hours or so without relief and by then, not only do we need to stretch our old bones as well, but are down to 1/2 tank give or take in the TV. Having approx. 1/2 tank "reserve" so to speak, made me decide that carrying extra fuel wasn't necessary for us.

So we just multitask and break at travel centers/gas stations at 2 hour intervals as much as possible. YMMV (pun intended).

But if you feel the need, just heed what others have said. Safety can, secure it well, and if possible, ventilation is your friend.

I'm assuming this would be for a generator. You can always bring the can empty then when you get near your destination, stop and fill it. Either way you should be good to go as long as you take the advice of the others on here.

I carry one 5-gallon steel can plus 6 gallons in the boat tank for extended generator use. I have no smell unless I spill some.

I have had odd reasons to need fuel ( stations out of service, traffic jams, etc)
I also limit my risk by not getting below 1/4 tank.

Some States have various restriction on how gasoline can be transported so I ensure my tanks are labeled DOT approved, etc.

On our trip from Minnesota to San Diego I took an extra 5 gal full of Diesel and used it a couple of times. When you get in the desert there are not a whole lot of petro stations and it came in handy. just strap it down and you will be fine. I will never take a long trip without taking extra fuel for it doesn't hurt and I have plenty of room in the bed of the truck and it is better than being stuck in the middle of nowhere.

Why haul gas around? Get it when you need it.

There are lots of places in Oregon, Washington, Nevada with no gas for more than 50 miles. Just about 30 minutes from my house is a sign for "Next gas 70 miles" and that is going up a pass. Another place without any gas for possibly 100 miles is between Burns and Fields Oregon on 205. Nevada has several stretches on HW 50 with no gas for many miles as well. Since I have a diesel, I always keep an extra 5 gallon can, just in case the one gas station is closed.

We took a trip last fall out to Yellowstone and I had a 2.5 gallon can for the generator. I have never carried gas with me before but figured it was worth it since I could use it in an emergency. Lo and behold, driving through the Big Horn Mountains, we come over the crest of a hill, about 10-15 miles from the nearest town, and I see a guy pushing his custom built motorcycle up the hill - he was out of gas. So, he got 2.5 gallons of gas to get him to the gas station. I refilled it at the next station.

Thank you guys for all of your helpful comments, I want to carry some gas in the back of my pickup because we are going to travel to Las Vegas and for what I have been told that there are some area going gas station in not plentiful.

Since I have never tow that long of a distance with my setup I don't want to under guess my mileage going. I'm sure that I will be okay but I would rather ask now than to ask in the middle of no man land.

That no-spill gas can look like something that I might want to get soon, thanks again for your comments it have been a big help to me and I'm sure other who might want to know also. The trip is about 1,200 long so I want to be sure and not get out there, people are crazy these days and I don't want to get my DW out there in no man land.

The gas can will be for my truck if I run close out before I can get to a gas station.

Having run into this on more than one occasion it's cheap insurance, especially when we take longer trips through sparsely populated areas or areas that we are not familiar with. Now that we carry a generator in the truck bed the gas can does double-duty.

I carry a 5 gallon Jerry Can in the back of my truck-- on a mount that's attached to the front of the bed.

Why... because I was a boy scout.
