Caulking Around Shower Surround

I happened to notice the other day that there is no caulk along the top of the shower surround. Now I have never used the shower in our old camper and I don't know that the new one will see much use but I was wondering if others have noticed this? While the surround goes pretty far up the wall, it doesn't go all the way and for those of us that are taller (I am 6'4") it would be possible for water to splash on the wall and run down between the wall and the surround. Of course once back there it would be trapped and could cause an issue.

They normally don't caulk so any humidity between the surround & wall can get out.

Yeah, I am talking about around the top. So is it better to leave it uncaulked?
I can send a pic when I get home.

Don't caulk it. It needs to breath and flex. It has a J lap to keep water from getting behind it.

Leave it uncauked. I just went in and checked the top of my shower.. No caulking there and I have used it most everyday since 2009.

same on bottom

Mine has a similar situation on bottom - looks like the surround just overlaps the top part of the tub. I cringe everytime I look at it but understand the reasoning.

Shortly after bringing my new trailer home I found a crack in the floor of the tub. Jayco sent me a new tub that I replaced myself. This is what I learned about how a tub and surround is installed. My trailer has a surround, but many trailers I looked at did not. The walls behind the surround appear to be the same as that used in trailers without the surround. The surround is held in place by 2 sided foam tape around the top and of course the rivets. There is no caulking at the top or bottom. The bottom of the surround overlaps the tub flange. The tub flange is sealed to the walls with putty tape and a few screws. This is the critical point. If water gets behind the surround it should be redirected back into the tub here. If the bottom of the surround was sealed water would be trapped. My tub cracked at the drain fitting because the drain pipe was not centered in the hole of the plywood tub support. The drain pipe was forced sideways. I increased the hole size and realigned the drain plumbing which solved the original problem. I would not recommend adding any additional caulking to the surround. However upon reinstalling the surround I did put a light coating of clear silicon over the heads of the rivets.

This is a picture of what is behind my tub and surround. I have an access panel that allows me to see underneath the tub. So far everything looks good.

The shower pan extends up and inch or two beyond the bottom of the wall. Water intrusion will not be a problem.

I do not remember having a reason to measure the distance from the floor to tub platform, but I would guess between 4 and 6 inches.

The manufacturers say not to caulk the bottom and top and I never have. No leaks. I can understand how sealing that area from air could cause condensation behind the shower liner to run down and cause many moisture problems that would be in-detected until a problem developed.

I have replaced the caulk under the shower door to keep water from dripping on the floor but not the other places.
