Condensation

I have a 2006 Jayco Jayflight 31 ft. BHS. I have noticed since the weather has turned cold that the inside of my door and the inside of the windows in the bedrooms are producing so much condensation that it is getting the pillows on the beds wet and running down the walls. Any suggestions on how to reduce this condensation? Dehumidifier?

Gartan,

Condensation is almost a given when camping during the cold weather, but keeping a vent and/or window open just a little will help along with lowering the furnace temp.

Yes, a dehumidifier will work great if you have the room for one.

Do you have MaxxAir type vents on the roof were you can leave them cracked all the time. Even though it may be very cold outside, it is worth it in my opinion to keep them open. Also make sure to open it fully when taking a shower as that adds a ton of moisture.

When we are camping in those conditions, I will usually open up the camper for about an hour a day and let it air out even though it is cold outside. Seems to really help.

The MaxxAir vent works for me. I never close the vent in the bath room.

We keep a roof vent cracked open, especially when camping in the cool and wet winter weather, which helps with the condensation. We boondock with a 'winterized' trailer and find the condensation is manageable, but only just...

The only way to totally avoid condensation would be to NOT cook, bathe, or breathe while in the trailer. I guess that is not going to happen.

Do any of you have condensation problems if your rig has dual pane windows and Polar Barrier insulation? I don't ever have a problem an I don't leave a vent or window open "ever". On a very cold day I will sometimes open the ceiling vent when taking a shower, but I don't do that every time either.
I full time and have never had a problem down to 13 degrees.
Am I just lucky?

Ed, it is probably a mix of luck and just one person in the coach. We seem to get condensation on the window frames and I don't see how doubble pane windows would affect that.

My folks have a higher-end trailer with dual pane windows, and have no problem with condensation, even when camping in the cool weather. That being said, however, they also keep a vent open, as simply breathing creates moisture - and you have to have a way to circulate the air to avoid problems...

I found out recently certain models of Dometic heat pumps with the Comfort Care Center 2 thermostat have a dehumidifier function.

You may also want to check to make sure the channel on the window drain is open and draining properly. My Jayflight 19RD has so much drainage from the windows I have icicles running down the outside of the TT.

Condensation

My earlier Jayco had a window at the pillow end of the bed and we had the same problem with wet pillows. I solved the problem by fitting a piece of insulated fiber board to the window and that solved the problem. The next Jayco I special ordered and had them leave the window out.

Our 29fbs has the same problems with condensation. I will try the suggestion that Roy W. suggests. I slso noticed the sidewall corners inside our wardrobe cabinets get condensation in them. Had some folded clothing in there and yuck. Why just the outside wall area. The over-the bed cabinets are dry? Anyone else have that problem?

Roy W., did you put the board on the inside or outside of the window?

The outside wall is cooler so water will condense there first.

I am with Ed, on our previous Eagle 5th Wheel we always had condensation problems during cold weather, now with our Pinnacle with the Polar Package and Dual Pane Windows, no condensation problems at all.
