I doubt sunscreen, which needs to be reapplied often would do anything. There are products to cover your awning but, 5 years in the Fla sun is not bad. We replace ours in Az little more often than that. One of the disadvantages of living in a sunny area... but the good far out weights the bad
They do make an awning tape which will hold much better than the small patches you used. But they are only a stop gap, once it starts to go your not far from needing to replace the awning.
