Curious about something

UPCamper said something in a previous thread way back when that always had me thinking, even though I disagreed with it adamantly. Nicely of course..

At the time it didn't seem worth getting in to a debate over, mainly, as I'm pretty sure there would never be a way to prove or disprove it.

But apparently it's never left me I have thought of myself as neurotic at times, this could verify my thought process!!!

PS: If anybody even remembers the thread, I put brand-new tires on it, D load LT tires, highest load I could for that size (wanted E) and all the problems were immediately cured! Pulled like a daisy at 75. But kept it to 60 just cause it felt "safer" to do anyway.

He said "You realize you aren't the only one with a 1 ton or larger truck on here correct? I own one as do the the majority of the users on this forum"

I don't know why I found that so incorrect, but intuitively it just didnt seem right.

My guess is that the vast majority of people on this forum, as well as the vast majority of people who RV with a tow vehicle, Drive 2500s. Next 3500s, than 1500s. That, of course is a wild guess. It could be 1500 comes and 3500s last.

Interestingly enough, I did a little bit of research, and I was quite shocked and surprised at the number of sales of 2500s compared to 3500s. I was way off I will admit.

I personally had guessed about 4 to 1. In reality it's more like 2 to 1. To say 2500s are sold twice as often. So what I did already learn, is that many more 3500s are sold than I believed. But considering the amount of work truck purchases, no telling what they are being bought for.

But back to my point, this opinion of mine is based soley on observation. I have absolutely no way to prove this and it's not very scientific. Just I see tons of 2500 trucks on the road pulling RVs and at dealerships, everywhere I look in fact.

Just curious to others opinions

My experience says 150 are the most popular in my neck of wood.

So whats your question? LOL

My guess would be 2500's are the most popular, then half ton's then 3500's.

Our poll seems to agree with the 2-1 ratio

Given the popularity of pop-ups, hybrids, and small ultra lite TT's; I think the 1500 has a much greater presence in the campground and would almost certainly move it into 2nd place to the 2500. From my observation, the 3500s seem to dominate the 5th wheel and larger toyhaulers. And this is also my unscientific personal opinion validated by hours of early morning and late evening dog walks.

Well, you need to remember that only " enthusiasts" spend their time here on forums like this. Folks who are only weekend warriors and very infrequent RVers will likely be just figuring it out on their own, or relying on their dealers for advice. I mean, how possibly could people have been RVing since the 40's without the ability to ask questions to a bunch of anonymous strangers until the mid 2000's?

I think a huge amount of "peer pressure" is conveyed upon folks when they ask the fateful question "will my tow vehicle suffice?" Heck, I've even seen mob mentality virtually pounce on people who dare suggest they keep towing with a Toyota, or some other half ton.

I absolutely love towing our Jayco 18 S RB with my 2008 Toyota Tacoma!
I guess the bigger the toy - the bigger truck it takes to tote it up and down the highway!

I've only pulled our 26 BH within about 30 miles so far. That includes Houston freeways, neighborhood streets, and a couple of hilly, winding narrow 2 lane black tops. But I will say, and I did have a thread to this affect, that my 1996 F350 with a Powerstroke, had LESS power than my 2015 Explorer. In addition, it only felt little more stable, and is much more difficult to back in tight areas. I suspect many people over pull their TV, but I'm betting a few have a bit of overkill as well.

Based on my personal experience and observations I notice there seem to be a lot more of the 1/2 ton class trucks out there towing trailers (I think it is safe to say, a 2 to 1 over the 3/4 ton and up). Yet, it does seem the 3/4 ton class trucks do outnumber the 1 ton class trucks on about a 2 to 1 basis. As I keep my eye open around the surrounding area I also notice a lot more 1 ton class trucks in the used car lots, as well as the heavy duties with the gas engines. It seems people tend to hang on to the 3/4 ton class truck a lot longer as well as the diesel engine.

It should be noted that among the comparisons between 3/4 ton and 1 ton class trucks, often times the engine, drive train, and gearing are the same. The only differences being the suspension (excluding the DRW class 1 tons). There was publication which pointed out, on a pound for pound ratio of the truck compared to the ratio of cargo and towing the 3/4 ton class trucks are more cost effective.

IMHO, I also notice a lot more people with the 1/2 ton class trucks and even smaller SUV type vehicles pushing the limits on towing with regards to weight and even when weight limits are not maxed out they push and exceed limits regarding length.

Just my two cents.

Where I live, there are a ton of F-150's. Most towing trailers that there is no way they should be towing. I see short box ones towing large 5ers all the time. One guy had his truck squatting so much it was practically touching the rear wheels. I asked him if he was concerned about towing a 5er with the short box and he replied with, "not at all! I never even check weights. I know it's okay because the truck stays so even". WTF? Crazy people here.

Would've been interesting if 150/1500's were included in the poll. I see a boat load of 1/2 tonners towing RVs all the time.

Just throwing this out there we use a Nissan Frontier to tow our 21FB @ about 5K loaded. We use a WD hitch and Sumo Springs in place of the OEM bump stops. The truck is rated for 6,100 and tows very nicely, level and smooth. It is the longest wheelbase (crew cab) version, similar to an extended cab 1/2 ton domestic.

The Frontier is pretty much the only truck with a factory roof rack which makes getting the kayaks into the woods a snap, and they may even help cut a swath through the air for less drag on the trailer. Just a guess though.
The real payoff is the narrower track which makes getting through the forest, after the trailer is set up, to the fishing holes. Fold in the mirrors and bushwhack away
