Electric Awning - any problems?

We have ordered a new Jay Flight g2 29bhs that comes with the electric awning. We still have a chance to change our order to a regular awning, but we need to do so soon.

What are the problems with the electric awning that we may consider to change the order to a regular awning.....

Healthi,

My wife Gale and I have a 2009 Jayflight G2 with the electric awning and we like it much better than the manual awning we had on a 2007 Jayflight. At the push of a button the awning extends; you can stop it part way out or all the way out. At the push of a button the awning retracts.

With the manual awing, you must slide a lock downward, then use a metal rod with a hook on top to extend the awning. Next you must slide one support upward and lock it, then the second support up and lock it.

One advantage of the manual awning is that you can tilt one end of the awning downward to drain water in that direction but if the wind is blowing you will want to retract your awning anyway.

Gale and I have a new 2010 Jayflight G2 29RLS on order with delivery in the Austin, Texas area tentatively scheduled for late September or early October. We have enjoyed both our 2007 and 2009 Jayco travel trailers. We took the 2007 all over Texas and into the mountains of Colorado. We took the 2009 on a long trip to the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Las Vegas, Zion National Park, Bryce National Park, the Painted Desert National Park and the Petrified Forest National Park.

If you do not already have a copy of THE NEXT EXIT, a guide of what's available at every interstate highway exit from coast to coast, it is the best $14.95 we have spent in a long time. We got our copy from our Jayco Dealer.

We prefer staying in state parks, national park campgrounds, national forest campgrounds and Corps of Engineers campgrounds. I have a Senior Pass to the national parks and national forests that I was able to purchase for $10 at a national park entrance station when I turned 62. The pass lets us gain entrance to national parks at no cost and camping is generally 50% off unless the campgrounds are run by a concessionaire.

Best wishes to you and your family for a great trip once you take delivery of your trailer. Make sure the dealer shows you how to operate the multimedia system, including how to play DVDs and watch them on TV.

Texas Sam

Do you find that you have less shade with the electric awning? Is yours a "flat pitched" awning?

Thanks Texas Sam

health,

I'm not sure how one defines "flat pitched" awning but the electric awning is a fixed pitch; you cannot adjust the pitch of the awning as you can with the manual awning.

We like the convenience of the electric awning and we have not yet encountered a situation where the electric awning needed to be adjusted to a different pitch. Also, when we had a manual awning on the 2007 trailer we found that when we adjusted the awning to a lower pitch the support arms were too low for easy movement from one side of the awning to the other--we had to duck our heads to pass either direction.

Electric awnings

So...by now you have the electric awining. How has it worked out. We have a 2008 27BH with electric awning. Zero problems to report. We live in the desert, Las Vegas, so do a fair amount of desert camping. Awning has been great.

Boy Sheetmusic! Did we have the questions when we first considered purchasing and ultimately ordering a Jayco tt back in July!! I remember struggling with whether or not to keep the electric awning or just have Jayco remove it from the order (they would only have credited us with $150!). At the other forums out there, I had read a lot of negatives. We did wind up keeping the elec awning afterall though. We have used it little in the 4 weeks or so that we have camped in our unit.

How has it worked out so far?
pros - easy to extend and retract
- with the Sunblocker by Carefree (hangs from the awning), even
though the awning is "flat pitched" the Sunblocker will provide the
shade that we can't otherwise get.
- we can easily extend it 2' on rainy days to serve as a 'covered
porch so we can go in and out of the door w/out getting wet.
- when wind kicks up, it is quick to retract at the flick of a switch.
- has the "auto dump" feature to release pool water from the rain
(although we haven't seen this happen yet).

cons - can't lower to accomodate for more shade where needed.
- flaps around easily in light breeze/wind which could break it.
- have to be diligent and remember to pull it in before leaving the tt (in
case winds come up while we are away).
- must have a Sunblocker attached to provide more shading.
- (future?) can't use the awning if something goes wrong with the
motor.

We like ours also, the electric that is. The pro's out weigh the con's. I need to get one of those Sunblockers. We run into occassions where the awning is so high it will not shade us. I've not seen them advertised. Will have to Google them. On our other camper I did tie down the electric awning, making sure to give it plenty of spring with bungie cords. It helped it in light to moderate winds from springing the arms up and down. I also manage to attach deflappers on each side to stop the jerking of the awing itself. I was very careful in doing so. I have to tell you, while we were gone for a short period of time, the strapping it down did save it from probably having it torn off. Two other campers in the park lost their awnings. We no longer leave it out when we're away for any length of time.

My biggest fear of the electric awning is for the motor to go south while it is extended. How do you get it in? I know if the switch goes bad, I can jumper it to roll it in. I have been told the awning can be retracted with a large allen wrench if necessary. I've never checked to see if that is possible. Anyone know?

Jim,

We bought our Sunblocker in-store at CW. Can't remember how much we paid. But they only stocked the 16' length. Our awning is 20', but the 16' still works ok.

I may be speaking out of turn, as I do not know much about the electric awning on the trailers, but our electric awning on the motorhome has six settings on each arm to lower each end as desired. Mine is two notches lower on one end so that water will run off easily.
Don't know why I am concerned really, because we never leave ours out if we are away or if it is raining. Sometimes, I will extend it partially to give a little cover to get out the door when it is raining, but not often. Found out the hard way that if you roll it when it is raining and you are standing in the doorway, you will get an instant bath.
Other than that, we have had real good luck with ours.

.
I really wish Jayco would have installed a nice electric awning on our tt as with your MH. Sounds like a nice one.

Leeman, that sounds like a nice awning than the one that came stock on our 5th wheel. Is it too made by Carefree? I's like to have one like that.

I too extend the awning about 3 or 4 ft when it is raining at times. Makes for a nice walkway down the side of the camper protected from rain. I have also had one of those quick showers standing in the doorway.

Mine goes straight out. It has a dump feature if it fills with water, but I can not set one side up higher than the other. BTW mine is a Carefree of Colorado, maybe I am missing something here.

Nope... you're not. The 2010 G2 29bhs came with the same one you have. Straight out with a dump feature and no tilt ability.

Hey Glazier,

Check with Carefree of Colorado for a different set of arms that will convert it to an angled awning. I have a 31RKS G2 and it's got the angled awning.

Regards, Hamshog

If ya find that Carefree does come up with a set of arms to convert the flat pitch to adjustable, please post the info. I'm hoping that they will at some point......
