Electric Tongue Jack does not work

Our trailer is 1 year old and since the day we brought it home the electric tongue jack does not work unless plugged into the truck. I know I can have them fix it on warranty but the location is hours away from where we live. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem might be? We don't see any loose wires. Thanks

These tongue jacks usually only have two wires, Positive and Negative. Just follow the wires and figure out where they are going. Since it works, I doubt it is a loose wire. Most likely, wired wrong from day one.

My jack only has one wire (for 12V positive) and grounds through the frame. Sounds like the ground is bad. When plugged into the tow vehicle, you are grounded to it. I used to have problems with mine, so I added a ground wire from one of the bolts connecting the the jack to the frame to the battery negative. The other possibility is that your trailer battery does not have enough charge and there is not enough voltage to run the jack motor.

Be sure you cover the power tongue jack because they are not waterproof and many will seize.

So... the only time the electric jack does not work is when you try to use the jack using only your trailer battery?

Do your trailer 12volt lights and fans work with the trailer disconnected from your truck?

Does your jack work when connected to shore power?

If fuse was blown, it wouldn't work regardless, not blown fuse. Works when plugged into truck.

Does it work when plugged to shore power? If it does I'd say a weak/dead battery or bad ground.

I don't think grounding is the issue. But to ensure, when hooked to the tv, remove one or two of the bolts that secure the tongue jack to the frame. Then sand the frame's underside to expose the steel frame. When reinstalling the bolts install a star washer between the frame and nut. This will give you a solid ground.

I think the issue is with your power feed. Check the wire routing that powers the jack, trace it back to the battery. It should go directly to the battery, ideally with a fuse,, nothing else shold be in between. If that is not the case I suspect that is your issue.

Actually it will work when plugged into the truck with the fuse blown, I discovered this recently. Apparently there's a separate connection?

I had this same problem, it was a blown fuse. If you raise the jack beyond the top, the fuse will intentionally blow to prevent damage.

It's more than likely a blown 30amp fuse

There's a fuse that blows when the jack operates overloaded. It will still work when connected to TV, but not off the trailer battery.
Look for an in line 30amp fuse towards the battery. Mine was hidden under a seat.

I have blown the tongue jack fuse once or twice, but I changed the fuse; not the power source. I don't recall if I was connected to the TV or not. But, IMO, it seems odd that a fuse designed to prevent damage to the jack from over extending, would be depend on the power source.

I haven't blown that fuse in a long time, but the next time it happens, FIRST I will try switching the power source, not the fuse.

I would say your battery is weak on the trailer check your ground like said above use the star washer between the Jack base and trailer frame. My jack is wired with one positive wire that runs to the battery and a inline fuse I replaced my fuse with one size larger and keep spares cranking with the emergency handle is a pa in especilly when using the Jack to set wd bars I have a super jack Barker vip 3500 with 24" stroke that unit worth the money very good

Power Jack Problems

My 2015 power jack has continually had issues with blowing the fuse, but we just used the power from the truck. I was told that this can be a problem since the jack isn't supposed to be totally up or down using the power? Anyway I had it worked on over the winter and it was working when I left the shop but yesterday I moved it out of storage and not only did the fuse blow, but now I can't even get it to work off the truck power. The jack was covered so no water. The work down on it put another circuit and fuse in the line and I was told that if it freezes, just lay off the switch and it will reset. The new line has a 40amp fuse in it. Well none of it works now.

Most all of the PTJ are not weather proof and love to have an extra rain cap on them. Like a bucket.
Those PTJ are simple to disassemble and do need preventive maintenance. Some have the fuse at the battery and some have a circuit breaker inside the unit. They are usually 30 Amp.
A 3500 lbs. PTJ will lift an half ton with ease. The switches are an easy target for moist which can create corrosion. Spray some WD40 or silicone spray in them.
If the PTJ is to tight against the tailgate when down, some can be turned a 90 and most of them 180 degrees.
Some use the chassis as ground and will fail often. Install a #10 ground directly between the motor and batt. minus.
If they seize up it is usual water in the gearbox and motor. Even if you buy brand new out the box they need a cover and pre-maintenance.

Does Jayco use Atwood power jacks? I hate the idea of a 5 gallon bucket thrown over the thing..

I wonder if this would fit?

When you guys say it blows fuses, are you guys talking about the breaker inside of the box? I looked for a use on mine and couldn't find it. Replaced the breaker just be safe and it PTJ works with 120V but not with 12V.

I agree with the blown fuse theory. I know that is what it was for me, two weeks after I took delivery. My fuse was along the wire route from the tongue to the trailer. Just trace the wire from the plug and follow it back to the trailer, the tiny fuse box was there. Mine was on the passenger side.

I think it was a 30amp fuse that was blown.

No problems since that time.

Mine also worked only while connected to the truck. But once I replaced the fuse, no problems.

I read somewhere if you overextend past a certain point while raising your jack, it will cause the fuse to blow. There is a demarcation line on the leg of the tongue if you look closely.

Hope this helps.

We have a 2016 Jay Flight 27RLS and ours only works when it is plugged into the truck or electric is plugged into outlet. My husband looked and the fuse was blown. We replaced fuse and it blew again.
