Electrical Question
My trailer has 50 amp service. I have a dogbone adaptor to go to 30 amp 125v for areas that don't offer 50 amp.
My garage has a 30 amp 250v plug that my dogbone won't plug in to, I'm assuming because it's different voltage. Despite some google searching I can't seem to find an adaptor to go from the dogbone to the wall outlet.
Can this be done? Is it safe? It'd be nice to be able to run one a/c when it's in my driveway for maintenance or cleaning days. I am clueless as far as electrical stuff goes... Thanks!

That's a 250volt plug and the RV's 110 so the are not compatible, you'll damage the RV plugging in there. Get an electrician to install a 30amp outlet not expensive.

The reason your dogbone won't plug into the 30A 250 V receptacle is because the 30A to 50A dogbone is meant to be plugged into a 30A 120V receptacle. You will need to have a 120V circuit run with the proper receptacle.

Definitely call in a professional. Or at least a talented amateur. That outlet will NOT power an RV properly, regardless of any dogbone adapter.
Your RV needs 120/240 VAC @ 50A (4 wires). Get somebody that KNOWS what they are doing to get the correct receptacle installed near where you park your RV.

THAT is exactly why the plug/outlet configurations are nearly impossible to connect incompatible voltages.
There are some 15A/20A combinations that are interchangeable within voltage.
But outside of that, no 120VAC connector will fit a 240V and amps have to match.

You're actually in a better place than you might think. The parts needed to change this over to 30a @ 115/120v are going to be pretty cheap. All you need is a new receptacle, a new single pole 30amp circuit breaker, and a panel filler plate. That's less than $40 in materials. Both applications call for a 3 conductor, 10 gauge wire so there's no need to run new wire. Any pro can do the entire project in less than an hour. Call in an electrician and count your blessings that you're getting off pretty cheap on this one.

SparkDr is right. You have the makings of what you need. A few parts and a little rewiring and you're in business. But be sure to get someone who knows what they're doing. Otherwise you'll be finding out about Murphy's Law of Electronics.
Murphy's Law of Electronics says "All electrical components are filled with smoke during the manufacturing process. If you ever let the smoke out the components will never work again."

I agree you were lucky not plugging into the 30 amp 240 volt receptacle. While your doing it I would go with a full 50 amp receptacle which will power everything in your RV. What happens on 50 amp is you have 2 120 volt 50 amp lines coming into your RV, at your panel it is separated into two "legs", each powering certain appliances and outlets. Each of your AC will be on a different leg, with each using 120 volts of power, chances are you have nothing that requires 240 power. With a 30 amp service you have 1 120 volt 30 amp line coming into the Rv. You would never be able to power everything in your RV even one at a time. Basically only half of your panel would be connected to shore power.
Do it right and put in the 50 amp 240 volt power source, while your at it.
You would have the same issue at a campground, a 30 amp service would only give you at total of 3600 watts of power, as opposed to your 50 amp service which will give you 12,000 watts of power. You can see how you have only about 1/3 of the power at 30 amps that you have available at the 50 amp service.
Good Luck.. and in a campground always try and find a 50 amp receptacle to plug into rather than settling for the at 30 amp service, you will then be able to enjoy your RV to it's fullest.

Do not even have a delivery date yet for the new baby but just had a 50 amp service installed today with separate surge protection so she will be happy. And I thought a boat was costly. lOL

Hahaha, you guys are too much. Admittedly I was smart enough to quickly realize they were not compatible, without trying to jam it in! I just wasn't sure if you could use an adapter or not.
Good call on the 50 amp install. And don't worry, I will definitely hire a pro to do it!

Understand, most professionals are not familiar with RV hookups. Down load a RV shorepower wiring diagram to eliminate any chance for a COSTLY mistake.

I did the same and had them check the plug and I than did it again when they left. I will probably get the good surge and voltage protection adapter when I get the rv. I need to see if I can access the power reel easily to mount a fixed unit or get the plug in unit with a lock box. On my old TT I just plugged in a voltage meter to a 110 outlet and have seen voltage drop below 105. That is why I will get the good one that shuts down with high or low volts and will keep from frying stuff

If you want an excellent primer on RV Electrical Systems, pick up Dale Lee Sumner's "Understanding your RV's Shorepower". It's very well written and will clear up any confusion you may have surrounding 30A and 50A service in a RV. And make sure the electrician you hire is familiar with RV service.

Installing a 50/240 will be a lot better than using a 30/120 and adapter. However, in that case it will require the running of new wire as your current outlet does not have enough conductors to install a 50/240. Be ready for a significantly more costly quote from the electrician. Unless you (or someone else) intends to live in your TT while parked at home I don't see why a 30A would not suffice. But hey, it's your money.

Just got new 50 amp breaker installed in my outside disconnect box , new ground rods with copper wiring, separate Square D surge just for that breaker, thirty five feet conduit with 6 gauge to a weather proof outlet. They made me a 25 extra cord and yes pricey over $700 but worth it. even thou I park it away from home I will use it at home for company and as my hurricane back up plan to live in since I am at ground zero for flooding (houses across street are on water)

Pro or not, make it very clear to him that you want 120v, not 240 or the camper will fry.
