Extended Warranty Question

Just bought a New 28BHBE. Got talked into an extended warranty for 7 years and it includes coming to site to fix it. Is it worth it.

Most of the replies on this site say 'No.' Some who do have it, never used it. Some say put your dollars in a bank account instead and use them if you need them for repairs... a 'self-insure' strategy.

Try the 'search' function and you may find a number of different responses.

I would say NO I doubt if you would ever need the warranty but if the warranty makes you and your family feel more relieved when using the camper go for it.

If you are not the "handy Mr. Fixit" type it probably makes more sense. I'm pretty much a do it myself person and I think it'd be money better spent on Adult Bev's. I tell myself if the extended warranty didn't make $$ they wouldn't want to sell 'em. I recently read a post

No. Not worth it. Huge money makers for the dealearships. If you can back out of the warranty at this point, I'd do so. See if your state has a cooling off period or something.

The way it was explained to me once was that an extended warranty is a wager between you and the manufacturer (or whomever is backing the warranty). You're betting the price of the extended warranty that something will go wrong with the product before the warranty runs out, and the manufacturer is betting the cost of the repairs that something won't break. You win if the cost of the repairs exceeds the price you paid for the warranty, and the manufacturer wins if they don't. Since Jayco builds a quality unit, the chance that the unit will need thousands of dollars worth of warranty work before the warranty runs out is pretty slim. Not worth it, IMHO.

When we bought our unit, the dealer offered the extended warranty and we declined without a second thought. Our previous trailer was a Starcraft hybrid and in the ten years we owned it, it did need some work -- namely a new fridge cooling unit and water heater. But when those needed to be replaced, they both would have been outside of any extended warranty period anyway.

Nope. Congratulations, you've just spent a couple thousand dollars on repairs that may never need to be made. We've all done something we regret, so don't feel too bad.

Depends. How much did you pay for it? If it was 2500 then no. If it was 1500 then yes. But, what does it over and what do you have to do to keep it. Lots of times you're required to bring it in to have inspections. At your cost. That adds to the overall cost. Plus factor in that you probably financed that EW cost for 10-15 years.
@4.0% interest on $2500 for 12 years is $652. So that warranty now costs you $3152.00

The warranty companies don't make money paying out claims.. Jaycos 2 year warranty is long enough to weed out any problems. Put the money you would spend on the warranty in the bank to cover future work..you will find your $$$ ahead doing that.

I've saved thousands over the years by not paying for extended warranties for ANYTHING.

Check the fine print carefully. Some warranties state you need to get everything in your trailer serviced by a dealer twice a year, or your coverage is void. Just add up the cost of having a dealer service the fridge, hot water tank, furnace, seals, slides etc.

Warranty companies are in the business of making money, not paying out money, so they will come up with any excuse not to pay. They are an expensive scam in my opinion. You are better off putting the money you would have paid in a savings account set up for possible future repairs.

I did buy the extended warranty on our Northern Lite camper. I have to admit i was beginning to think it was a mistake until the electric Happi-jacks seized up due to salt mist ingestion from winter travel on our Canadian highways. The jacks were covered by the warranty (3200.00 canadian). Definately worth it there. We did declined the offer for the Jayflight tho.

Good responses. I am closing on our 32BHDS in two days. They offered the extended warranty but my first question is always "can I wait until the standard warranty runs out and then buy it". Of course this is always the case in my experience. So my strategy is if it hasn't had any problems after two years don't do it. If it has had some systems fail (like slide out mechanisms) then I will consider it.

Warranties are like everything else, different prices and different terms. Shop before you buy. My credit union offers a warranty with no deductibles at half the price of our car dealer and almost a third the price of the company that started mailing and phoning me warning that my warranty was about to expire on DW's brand new SUV. Don't know if they will cover an RV but I'll check if I feel the need.
