Question F150 tow 29 ft RES Eagle Superlite

Hello,
I am a newbie here and have a towing question. I have a 2010 F150 4x4 super crew. It has the max towing package, 5.4l, 3.73, intgr trailer brake system. I am getting a 2011 29RES Eagle. Its on the way to the dealership now. (wife didnt like the interior of the one at dealer so he found us the one she liked..). My concern is towing this trailer. There are so many opinions out there! Just wondering if anyone in here pulls 9200 GVW with a 150 or 1500. The books all say its ok.
Thanks for any input!
Jeff

Jeff, what is the tow rating of your truck? How much available payload? One thing to consider is the tongue weight of the trailer which is ideally about 13% of loaded weight. A heavy tongue weight can eat up payload. This is usually the weak link in half tons, not so much the tow rating. When you add in tongue weight, hitch, propane, battery, passengers, fuel, gear and items in truck you can surpass the rear axle rating and the trucks GVWR. I`m not saying you can`t do it, just research the numbers closely. That is a 34' trailer with a 9200 lb Gross weight and 870lb empty tongue weight. The tongue weight will be considerably more loaded. I know it would be too much for my truck, but they have beefed up trucks some since 2004. Good luck, Lee

Personally, I think you have too much trailer for the truck. Of real concern is that 3.73 axle. I will be towing less trailer, but demanded a 4.10 axle. Just a guess here, but from your description, you are overloaded, probably by a bunch.

I think you are right. Ive been crunching the numbers. 13% of the loaded trailer is 1190. Passengers (2) is 350 and cargo (guess) of 300 exceeds my max payload of 1612. My tow capacity is 11,200 and combined is 17,100. Its seems like a gamble, at best, to try and pull this trailer. Last thing I want is to be unsafe or worry every time I pull it. The wife really loves that fireplace in the Eagle tho! Thanks for your input.

Hi Jeff and welcome to the Jayco Owners Forum!

We have the same truck as you (minus the 4x4). We may have that high towing capacity, but I can tell you from experience, even with the "lighter" 6,900lb+ we realllllly bog down to 35-40mph on grades. We slow to 45-50mph on hills. The tow/haul 'button' works *very* well with the uphill grades, and especially on the decline to help keep the speed down. It pulls well at 65mph on flat terrain with little/no wind. We get around 9mpg towing.

Our tongue weight is just over 1025lbs with front storage loaded, two batteries, both propane tanks full, and two bikes in truck bed. Our Equalizer brand wdh does well preventing sway, however with that heavy tongue, there is still a little more than the recommended 1" desrepency between truck front/rear (measured before hook-up and after hitching up). The books say it's ok, but personally, I wouldn't want to tow anything heavier than what we have with our curren29bhs g2.

Although this is our experience, we hope this helps.

Sounds like a good plan to me. Congrats and enjoy the new Eagle.

Boy now that is a good way to get a new truck. We tow a ESL 256 RKS with an F150 so far so good. I know i can't sucker my wife into that or afford a new truck right now either. Enjoy the Eagle Superlites are a very nice trailer. When we told our friends we bought ours they told us how excited they were that we could come camping in our new trailer. i told them it was way too nice to take camping. They had no idea how to respond at first.

Just wondering if you carry water when towing? We are definitely going to weigh in this spring (new trailer near end of last year), and I’m very new to all the weight #’s, but I’m surprised to see that much tongue weight given a gross of 6,800#. Puts you at the max of the 15% of gross range. I’m not sure how much cargo we carry, but I was thinking it was less than 1,000# (never carry water, not that much stuff) but I know..its always more than you expect.

Our dry weight is 6,300 and use a 1,000# equalizer hitch.

Camper 10

I had a Jayco 2004 29BHS with the same weight as your camper. I tried to pull it with a 1/2 pickup for 2 years. I finally had enough, when I was almost hit a truck on the highway. I was pulled over to the other lane because of the tail whipping action from the trailer. The 1/2 ton could not handle the sway from the trailer and I had the biggest sway bars you could buy at the time. I bought a nice used 2004 Dodge 1 ton diesel and I have had no problems since I purchased the vehicle. I hope this helps.

We never travel full with water as we only "boondock" when we are on a looooong road trip and plan to do WM overnight. But we always have at least 1/3 tank of water for when we stop to use the toilet/eat/wash hands/etc on the road (we do a lot of long distance traveling).

Through research we learned that we needed the 1200lb Equalizer WDH (they originally gave us a Huskey with one stablizer bar as they ran out of the Equalizer and we wiggled all over the interstate with it!). The Equalizer permformed much better. Come to think of it, we may want to re-weigh our current set-up before we hit the road on our East Coast road trip (last year our "tongue" weight was 13%). Better safe than sorry
