Fresh Rubber

Well Gang...

I finally got my fresh rubber on the trailer and got rid of the old dry rotten tires. Really does make a difference in towing with fresh rubber it just seem to glide better...

Darn thing had the cheap plastic hub caps and plastic lugnut covers which were all damaged I was already missing 1 hub cap...

So I said screw it... Yanked them all off and when I'm a few bucks ahead I'll pick out a nice set of chrome hub caps and lugs for the beast...

No water yet...

But that was after I lubed up the axle bearing and put a little bit of oil on the lug thread and it spun all over the rim. I just got to wash it up. It your case I'm going to imagine the tire shop might of spray a lube on the wheel studs and have the same effect...

Wash it up and see if it returns...

I really don't think that lube is supposed to be used on lug nuts.

yeah, I think I read that lubing the studs makes it too easy to over torque the lug nuts.

Not if you check them with a torque wrench as is recommended. I picked one up at Harbor Freight for around $35. It's probably not the most accurate one made, but I'm not torqueing head bolts on a race engine, and the specs for the trailer lugs are pretty loose, 90-120lbs. I check them every time I leave for a camping trip. I also carry a small air compressor so that both truck and trailer tires can be aired up while cold. Maybe overkill, but I'm a belt and suspenders guy.

LOL... I'm the same way I got a 1/2" driver torque in the shop solely for that purpose and check the wheel lugs anytime there is a wheel remounted... I set it for 100 foot/pounds for truck and the trailer(s)...

Even when I have tires balanced or rotated, I tell the shop not to honk down on them with their impact guns and I set them myself when I get home. I've actually twisted the shank on a lug wrench trying to beak some of those lugs loose that have been "welded" on with an air gun.
