Furnace Smoking

Ok, Admittedly this is a bit of a spaz post, but better safe than sorry. I fired up my furnace for the fist time this year, (quite possibly the first time the furnace has ever been fired) and it set the smoke alarm off. There was a lot of smoke visible in the lights. I'm thinking that seeing as how this is probably the first time it has ever been started, it was probably just burning off some oil and grease and dust. I just wanted to check with some others with more experience to see if I'm just kidding myself, or if this is not that big of a deal. thanks

That is MOST likely what is going on. Just open the windows and air things out let the furnace run for about 5-10 minutes. New furnaces have an oil coating to protect them from rusting if they are in storage for a long time. You shouldn't have any further problems down the road.

if it was the first firing of the furnace, they will smoke and stink. I recommend running it for 30 minutes with the windows and doors open. If you have a fan I would put it in the door too.

Same thing happened to me with our 26bhw. first camp out was in driveway for an initial shakedown. Was a bit chilly so i fired up furnace and bingo alarms were going off, kids freaked out. But all was well opened up door and windows let it air out for a few. Only happened that one time been fine ever since. Manufacturing oils and what not burning off for first time.
